My Mercury Space Helmet (and boots) FINISHED!

I currently making a full Mercury space suit costume. But for now, here is the helmet I just finished up. It started out as a raw fiberglass Navy MKIV helmet casting. I cleaned it all up and removed the bumps on the back to match the contours of the Mercury helmet. The frame around the visor is custom cut aluminum. The interior of the helmet (pads, ear cups) is all custom sewn leather by me. The mics are replicas of the M101 mics from the flight helmets. Most replica's I've seen duplicate the M87 mics in the training helmets. So I'm pretty proud of that little detail. Every one of the flown Mercury helmets (and suits) were a little different. This is a pretty faithful recreating of Gus Grissom's Liberty Bell 7 helmet.

I also finished my boots. A lot of custom sewing and eyelet punching here:

That is freaking cool! I've thought about doing the same type of thing, but I didn't know that castings were available. I figured it would have to be done the hard way.
 
Your helmet casting was taken from my real MKIV helmet, as I lent my helmet to Steve for casting. Well done with the conversion. :thumbsup
 
Very nice, I like it very much! It brings back the memory of the Apollo Program, I always liked the silver suits, I think they still looks very futuristic today. Great work!
 
Very cool! I was just watching a program on the Apollo and Mercury space program. That was some real cowboy rocketry!

It's also the later model that looks cooler. The earlier helmets had a forehead swoop that looked awkward if I remember correctly.
