Hey guys, I have recently started finally getting back into collecting (YAY!) and have decided to focus on Star Wars helmets for the time being. I always thought it would be cool to have kind of a "trophy wall" of mounted Star Wars helmets. I love the Detolf cases and I have one, but Darth Vader's helmet doesn't fit and I don't have enough room to have several cases to display them. My options are kinda limited with my small home office so I decided to start mounting them to the wall as I collect them. But to do that, I needed a cheap, sturdy wall-mounted helmet stand that looks decent. I also wanted it to sort of hide behind the helmet to give them a bit of a floating look. I looked every where and think I saw one maker of them but they were $60-$80 a piece and there was problems with the site so i don't even know if they're currently being offered. I also have access to my brother's shop so I'm sure I could have designed one in CAD and milled it out but I decided to go to Home Depot and see if I could make something quickly and easily that didn't cost a lot and looked good. It ended up being SO easy that I thought I'd post a tutorial of sorts in case anyone else ever has a similar idea. I'm sure you could come up with all kinds of cool looks so this is just a quick design to give you some ideas if you ever want to try it. The whole thing costs about $13 and I built 2 of them in about 20 minutes each. All you need to put it together is a saw to cut the pvc, some screws, and paint.
What you need:
Run to Home Depot and pick up the following (part numbers included):
1- 2" pvc end cap ($1) 012871628382
1- two foot long piece of 2" pvc pipe (5$) 611942109463
2- 2" 45 degree elbow joints ($1 each) 611942034024
1- 2"x3" pvc floor drain ($5) 739236300508
Then stop by the gas station / grocery store / liquor store and grab a six pack of your favorite beer.
Here are the parts (minus the 2' pvc pipe)
Step 1. Pour a beer (but don't drink yet, sharp tools coming up) then cut the PVC with a saw (I just used my miter saw). you'll need to measure the pieces to fit your helmet but for a Stormtrooper helmet or similar here's what I did.
1 piece at 2"
1 piece at 3 3/4"
1 piece at 4 3/4"
Step 2. Drink a beer
Test fit the pieces and make sure the helmet sits properly and clears the bottom. For a Vader helmet you'll need the piece that's 4 3/4" to be an inch or two longer.
The 3 3/4" piece of pipe connects to the floor drain
Next goes an elbow joint
Then the 2" piece of pipe
Then the other elbow joint
Next goes the 4 3/4" piece of pipe (longer or shorter depending on the helmet)
and finally goes the end cap and you'll end up with something that looks kind of like a robotic horse penis.
Step 3. Laugh at the horse penis, drink a beer, then walk into the living room proudly displaying your robotic horse penis to your wife by holding it in the appropriate manner.

Step 4.
unscrew the metal grill from the drain and discard it (or save it for another project). Using a 7/16 bit, drill four holes into the flange. This is your base and these holes will be used to mount it to the wall.
Step 5.
insert the 3 3/4" piece, slam it down hard to get the pipe ALL the way into the drain. You can see that the end of the pipe is flush with the inside lip of the flange.
Then drill four holes into the side wall of the drain and screw it together.
Step 6. Drink a beer.
Step 7.
Set that piece aside and focus on the two elbow joints and the 2" piece of pipe. Put them together as shown, lining up the grooves in the elbow joints to ensure it will be straight. Push the pieces together as tight as they'll go. A rubber mallet or some good elbow grease will help here.
Step 8.
Drill 4 holes into the side wall of EACH elbow joint about center of the ridge so that it goes through the pipe. There should be 8 holes total. You can line them up with the grooves of the elbow joints. Screw these pieces together and then attach this piece to the other piece you already built.
Step 9.
Drink a beer.
Step 10.
Drill more holes into the other end of the first elbow joint so that it goes into the 3 3/4" piece of pipe. I only put 3 holes on this one because the angle prevented me from getting the 4th.
Step 11.
Screw this piece together then attach the 4 3/4" piece of pipe and end cap. You can screw this piece together if you wish but since it will be vertical, it is unnecessary.
Step 12.
Drink a beer.
Step 13.
I mounted mine to a scrap piece of wood by lightly screwing a single screw in through one of the wall-mounting holes of the flange so that I could set it outside to paint.
Step 15.
Paint! I used a dark metallic hammered steel paint that I already had laying around.
Step 16.
Using good drywall anchors and screws, measure, mark, double check that it's level, and screw it in!
And the finished product!
Now Drink a beer and repeat as needed!
