I have just recently started to get into sculpting, and Its got me super excited! My entry to this challenge is a sculpture of Groot, based on the version used in the upcoming film, Guardians of the Galaxy. This whole experience is completely new to me, I haven't really ever sculpted something this big, or complex. So! I will sculpt it in monster clay, armature made out of some computer cable. Groot interior structure for wire1.jpg10470935_653798841374496_197390580218729871_n.jpg I got the dimensions from sketching Groot in Sketchbook, then drawing were the wire would be, printing it out and measuring it. at the beginning of this last week I attempted to sculpt Groots head, it turned out to be exactly 2x bigger that the scale that I had chosen. 10433838_653798814707832_8649446842878712619_n.jpg

Here is some more progress pictures

I started out by trying to block out the basic shape of his body, I didn't want to much clay on him because I wanted to be able to sculpt a piece of bark and just stick it on there. without worrying about it being to thick.

I started to sculpt and lay on the bark pieces, and mess around with his posture and the texture of the bark. I'm pretty happy with how the texture is coming out, I will just scrape some lines in the clay, smooth it out with my finger, well, its more of a smoosh/smooth kind of thing. Then I go back in and draw a few more lighter lines, and a couple thicker deeper ones, then smoosh/smooth again.

I found some much better reference material, and completely re worked most of the chest area. I have also started blocking out some of the left leg.

I am really loving how this is coming out!

Mow i'm just blocking out all of the roots, I'll start on the head once most of it's done. I wondering if I can use some type of bead or something for his eyes? Is that against the rules?

Thanks guys for the comments, that is if you were talking about me, if you were talking about MattyHarle's Groot bust, then that praise was well deserved.

Anyway, I have finally gotten back to working on it. I have finished roughing out the left arm, and decided to quickly make a 'understructure' so that if there is an area that doesn't full cover up the clay underneath, it will still look like its layers upon layers of roots.

I have ripped off his entire chest, and I covered it in roots. now I'm texturing it all. I should be done with the roots today and have all the bark and the whole thing textured by tomorrow. Then do a rush job on the head, and get it in by Thursday night!

Its not shown in these photos byt I have finished up the left leg, and have gotten very close to finished on the right arm. It's super late, so I will leave his head and final texturing for tomorrow. Oh! and I also added some type of a ground. Anything is better than the wires showing.
