Star Lord helmet AND accessories!!! by Helagak!

Hey everyone, completely new to this and looking for a little guidance. The plan is to make a foam build of the helmet and other accessories, but I need a little help navigating the download process. I click the link, which takes me to 4shared, where essentially anything clickable looks like a trapdoor into porn-level malware. I've signed up for the site. Clicking "Get the file now with utorrent" just takes me to a page with utorrent download capability and nothing else - I already have the software installed. Clicking "Download" below forces me to download another application, which forces me to reinstall utorrent and apparently add a host of other applications. I just want the file. I imagine that I'm missing something relatively obvious, so if someone could just hold my hand a little bit, I'd be very grateful. Thanks and congratulations on an amazing build.

I believe you have to sign up for a (free) 4shared account (though I could be wrong). Click the "Download" link:

4shared.png

You'll get a pop-up window, but that can be closed. You'll also get two options on the next screen (which I can't screenshot because my work blocks that page) - one for an instant download (which you have to have a paid account for), and one for a download with a 20-second delay (this one is free). Click that, and after your 20-second wait you'll get to save the file to your computer.

If you're still having problems I can do more screenshots when I get home, but that will be later since I have errands to run after work today.

Hi All, firstly, thanks to Helagak and the other contributors to this thread, it is mega!

Secondly, i have the crazy notion to use 123d make and assemble a helmet with bust from that then fill and sand like crazy because I'm a glutton for punishment :)

The first picture posted is exactly the one i want but the link seem to only contain the unfolded pep or the individual pieces for a 3d print.

Any suggestions? or even better does anybody know of a .3dmk helmet file?

Thanks again folks

I bought cheap $7 el wire from Amazon and it seems to be bright enough.

What color el wire are you using? I think I bought the same exact stuff, it was $7 off amazon but I got the red and found it to be too dim. After thinking about it I think I want to get some white lighting since red lights will be inherently dimmer and unnecessary behind the red plastic.

My lenses are a clearer red that I'm going to blur with a clear matte coat of paint. When I tested the lighting effect by putting wax paper behind the lenses it seemed fine. I've never done anything with LEDs, so I'm sticking with what I know.

This is actually a really great idea, I hadn't thought about doing something like that to make the lenses a bit more opaque. Mine are very clear as well,so I think I might do likewise. If you get around to it sometime soon please share some pics.

I bought the red as well. I almost went white like you suggested, but on second thought I wanted any like leakage from the helmet to be red in color and not white. That's probably personal preference though. This is the first time I've actually used pep files to build something and it isn't turning out as great as I had hoped, but I'm learning. I'll try to get some pics of the helmet, trench coat, and eventually the bag up.

Does anyone know the dimensions to the blaster clip holster?

*it seems to be 1'' wide x 1.5'' long x 2/16 but not sure of thickness.

This will be my first build ever. I am curious about how to size this. I know Pepakura has a way to scale it, but without the original persons measurements how do I know how much to adjust it by?

Helegak can you help me? first time using this website and trying anything really I want to make the star lord helmet out of the evc foam? (i think thats what its called) and i have a mac so i can't see your files help me please :(

You would go by the actual size of the pepakura file itself. You can see the measurements (height, width, depth) from within the program, and then you would adjust the scale based on your own measurements. The best way I've seen for sizing a helmet is here: http://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=148889&page=96&p=3376464&viewfull=1#post3376464 (scroll down a bit to the screenshots of the Captain America helmet file, and the guy sticking his head in the doorway). Just remember to add a bit more space to account for the thickness of your foam. I also like to make a quick-and-dirty paper version to roughly test the fit before I spend hours cutting and gluing foam.

You should be able to run the software in emulation, just search for "pepakura for mac" on google.

These are some instructions I wrote on the 405th for running Pepakura on a Mac.

You can setup Pepakura using Wineskin Winery.

1. Make sure you have bought and downloaded Pepakura Viewer or Designer depending on what you exactly need and have the .EXE.

2. Go to http://wineskin.urgesoftware.com/tiki-index.php download and install the program from the DMG.

3. Launch Wineskin Winery. From here we'll need to grab a New Engine. Make sure you use 1.5.14 (do not select the AMDspeedhack) or else you'll never be able to select a default exe and have to go through the "install process" every time. From here highlight the 1.5.14 engine by clicking once and hit "Create New Blank Wrapper". Once you do this you'll name your app (call it Pepakura or whatever you'd like) the first time you'll receive notifications to install Wine Mono and Wine Gecko, go ahead and do this. Once it's finished you'll get the option to view your wrapper in Finder and just move it to your desktop.

4. Double click on the wrapper/app we created and click "Install Software", from here navigate to your pepakura installer.exe file and select it. From there you will install it like a normal Windows program. Deselect "Create Shortcut on Desktop" as it's useless in this case, if you forget it'll simply just create a .INK file you can delete later from your desktop.

5. You will receive an invalid error, don't worry about it just hit okay and Pepakura will launch, you will receive this error each time but don't be alarmed. At this point quit out of the Pepakura app you just created (CMD+Q). You should receive a notification that you need to select a default .exe. Make sure you select pepakura3.exe from the list. You can now relaunch Pepakura easily each time and enter your key code to unlock the full version, you will only have to enter your code once on the next launch.

As far as I can tell all functionality is here and you can print as well without a problem.

Thanks. I guess I should have thought that I could just add the thickness of the foam on both sides to my head measurement lol. If only I had majored in engineering and minored in math... oh wait..... :/

I am curious how to read the unfolds. When looking at the print preview some items are obvious where they go while others are not. I found a setting that shows numbers but it seems to only connect to areas on the same individual piece and not to other pieces. Do you guys have some kind of mold of your head for knowing how to shape this? Also it seem like some pieces need to be cut twice.

A lot of foam unfolds will only print out half the pieces because you can flip them over and trace the opposite "mirrored" piece on your foam (e.g. you can print out the left cheek piece, trace it on your foam, then flip the template over and trace it again to get the right cheek piece). Foam unfolds also don't use a lot of the detail pieces (you can usually see them in a pile off the printable area) because some of the details are best done later with other material, or can be emluated by using the thickness of the foam (e.g. you don't need to cut out pieces of paper to change the elevation of a piece because the foam is thicker than the paper so you can just glue it higher or lower than the piece beside it instead of cutting a piece of paper to join the two pieces).

I haven't built Helagak's file for foam, but if you click on the piece you're trying to place on the pages, it will highlight on the model so you know which pieces it connects to. Then you would just mirror it for the other side. Hopefully this makes sense!

Yes it does. Looking at everything more closely and playing with the software more I was able to make more sense out of it. Like on his build the forehead is 5 pieces, well with foam you could make them 1 piece because you can mold it. Then add detail with a dremel or extra foam. I was also thinking that if you make a helmet too big you could also add foam inserts inside of it to offset it. So if it is 1/2in too wide then add 1/4 insert on both side so that could hold it to your head. Do people typically use a cast of a head to help them mold/construct it? I was thinking of checking out hobby lobby for a foam manikin head if I can find one close to my size to build upon.

I didn't use a head cast to build it on, though I suppose it's a possibility.

You can also check out JFCustom's Star-Lord foam unfold. His is simpler than Helagak's (at the cost of not being as accurate). It might be a better build to start with for your first attempt.

Anyone having trouble printing the left cheek? The three offset tubes do not appear to print however no problems with the right cheek. Any thoughts on this would be great as I've tried all sorts only option I have left is to mirror the right cheek and hopefully that should fix it
