CelticRuins 2014 Halloween Costume Contest Entry: Gimli - The Lord of the Rings

Re: Fellowship Gimli - The Lord of the Rings

Thanks!

Did a pull of my nose, and am loving the result in gelatin!

Though I didn't put enough mold release on my upper lip and it got ripped off...SONOFA! Ah well it's still fine, plus I have 2 face casts.

Gelatin pulled:

Powdered and put on with Prosaide...didn't finish cleaning up the edges or add makeup since this was merely a test:

The under eye and cheek sculpts are next!

Re: Fellowship Gimli - The Lord of the Rings

Looks good! It really gives you that dwarf look.

Do you think a brow would help sell the effect even more?
Maybe just fake eyebrows, and eye bag make up?

VERY cool! I have always loved Gimli and wished more people would do his character!

keep up the good work! where did you learn all your craft skills? I liked your skyrim build and I may need some pointers for that! :)

Re: Fellowship Gimli - The Lord of the Rings

Long time no update!

The end is nearing! So is Dragon*con...anyway last week I completed the upper pauldrons. Made from foam, leather, vinyl and 70+ resin castings:

I've still got massive distressing to do, the boots to finish and the chainmaille skirts. And I need to do a full makeup/prosthetics test. *phew* I got this!

Re: Fellowship Gimli - The Lord of the Rings

Looking awesome!
Not being a wig guy, I had to google what 'hand ventilated was'...holy cow. I think I would go blind. Does this technique make it look more realistic? Or is it a matter of it giving you the flexibility to put the hair exactly where you want it?

Treebeard would be proud of your work, as you are not being hasty! =)

Re: Fellowship Gimli - The Lord of the Rings

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh my!! Talk about jaw-dropping stunning work!! I had thought about making a Dwalin costume last year, but put it off. After seeing what you've done for Gimili, may just have to follow your lead...Dwarves!!

Fantastic work, just fantastic! Can't wait to see more!!!!

Re: Fellowship Gimli - The Lord of the Rings

Thanks guys! And it'd be an honor, tusken!

It's both with ventilating! Using fine tulle/french lace allows you to knot your own hair and seamlessly blend into your skin. I used tulle...though delicate, it's going to almost disappear. Not a good choice for those who are harder on things, but I'm going to be extra careful applying and removing, as to preserve it.

You can do this with lace front wigs as well. I'm completely redoing my bf's Legolas wig this year. I ventilated his old one last year, but was never happy with it. So I'm starting fresh, to get a more accurate hairline!

Re: Fellowship Gimli - The Lord of the Rings

We leave for Dragoncon tomorrow, so I'm taking a break to drink my breakfast coffee and chug back along! Gotta finish hemming my Fellowship cloak and then Gimli is completely done!

Did a makeup test this past weekend...I'll be cleaning it up more and I mixed my gelatin concotion wrong, so it wasn't as strong as it could have been and ripped...my fault for rushing, but that's what tests are for! This was just to get an idea on shading, texturing and skin coloring.

Hopefully some good pics will arise from Dragon*con! We have a FULL FELLOWSHIP! We'll be out on Saturday after the parade.

We'll get Legolas/Gimli photoshoot pictures up after Dragoncon I'm sure...

Re: Fellowship Gimli - The Lord of the Rings

Back from Dragoncon! Man...Gimli was probably the toughest costume to walk around in. I was GUSHING sweat. I sweated through under armor, a fat suit and my outer tunic. But it was too much fun, and I tried to grin and bear it as long and humanly possible! I was in it from 11 until almost 6 at night.

Waiting on the Autumn weather to roll in before we venture out for a photoshoot. Here's some pics from con. We had a full Fellowship for a little while on Saturday!

Re: Fellowship Gimli - The Lord of the Rings

Just beautiful work! You have an incredibly deep and wide skill set! You are ready to audition for Face Off!

Re: Fellowship Gimli - The Lord of the Rings

Thanks guys! I hope to do a photoshoot soon to showcase it off more! Waiting on the weather to level out and get cooler...

Re: Fellowship Gimli - The Lord of the Rings

Went and got some shots out in the forest this weekend! Sadly I can only wear Gimli for a little while, and as I've learned...definitely not hiking out in the forest. He's gonna take a bit of a break until I install some sort of cooling system, or remake the fat suit out of a lighter material. Otherwise, I'm thrilled with him!

I'm going to be redoing the prosthetics in something a little more stable than gelatin, since it melts. Though it's awesome and blends great, I'll probably bite the bullet and buy some silicone. I'm happy with my molds enough that I doubt I'll re-sculpt. Other than that the only other thing I think that needs more work is my under maille skirt. It keeps disappearing behind my tunic, so I'll probably add a few more rows of rings.

Wow! Amazing work! I followed along on your build. That makeup was awesome! Hope you stayed hydrated!!

That guy standing next to you in the two top pictures could pass for a Daryl Dixon.

so... What's the plan for the next DragonCon? :)
