Star Trek – Klingon May’Ron – Build & Finished

Here’s one you won’t see every day :lol

Been working on this on and off since last June, picking it up occasionally every few weeks … sometimes every few months :lol

So, what the heck is a May’Ron anyway :lol ???

Those familiar with Deep Space Nine will know that there is a Klingon Restaurant on the promenade, owned by the chef Kaga.

He always entertains his patrons with music, and often uses a Klingon instrument called a May’Ron, which is an accordion / concertina.

This prop is shown in the book “The Art of Star Trek” and it has always been a fascinating prop I’ve always wanted (surprise surprise :lol)

Of course, and though it’s only a musical instrument, but being Klingon, it can also be used as a weapon, and comes complete with Targ claws, I presume for dismembering customers who complain :lol

Here are a few screen grabs

And here is Kaga singing ‘Aqla Bela Du’ with Jadzia during one of her frequent visits to the restaurant

(I have no idea how to hack a DVD to copy a clip, so please tolerate this clip filmed from my TV with my cellphone :wacko)

The prop itself was sold by PIH years ago, and here are some pics of it at the time

So, on to the build, and as usual, a 'close-enough' / that's a May'Ron :lol, would be good for me as an end result :D

A strip of 2cm thick balsa wood

accb1-947x464.jpg

Cut into parts

accb2-937x449.jpg

And joined together

accb3-819x553.jpg

Templates marked out

accb4-812x548.jpg

And a separate cut out thinner template of balsa wood added on top

accb5-807x544.jpg

Sanding down all the edges to get the shape

accb6-801x540.jpg

Joints and imperfections filled with wood filler

accb7-793x535.jpg

accb8-786x530.jpg

The four edges of each ‘finger’ and the outer edges all sanded down to slant

accb9-779x525.jpg

The ‘finger’ spaces also sanded down

accb10-772x520.jpg

All sanded smooth when ready

accb11-771x519.jpg

The palm rest outlined

accb12-776x523.jpg

Test fit and sanded down to shape

accb13-770x518.jpg

Refined and shaped

accb14-768x517.jpg

Stuck on to panel and sealed gaps with wood filler

accb15-770x518.jpg

The two outer parts of the rest sanded down further for contour

accb16-768x517.jpg

Next, cut out the ‘keys’

accb17-766x516.jpg

And made the Targ claws out of clay.

accb18-767x478.jpg

For the Targ fur straps, I used an el-cheapo faux fur fashion bracelet obtained from China (ebay :lol)

accb19-765x515.jpg

I unstitched one of the bracelets, removed the lining, and cut it in half

accb20-759x511.jpg

Then came the bellows (which were a ruddy pain to make due to the inverted bending :wacko)

Testing templates

accb212-771x519.jpg

Template made on a sheet of cardboard and folded ‘over and under’ using a ruler and a piece of wood to shape the bends

accb22-772x520.jpg

Bellows made, and edges fixed on to then stick to the panels

accb23-600x400.jpg

And finally, here is everything stuck together and painted

And how it fits into the surroundings

Some thoughts.
No CLUE what it is.
You did an amazing job replicating it.
You have too DAMN much time on your hands!

another one to add to your sig ;)

It doesn't fit :cry

Edit - Now it does :lol

No CLUE what it is

Well, now you know :lol

Another not very well known Prop expertly re-created!! :thumbsup

You know, for being a prop that is never really seen all that close-up, the time, effort, creativity and details they created it with are jaw-dropping !

I remember staring at this in utter bewilderment since the day I bought the Art of Star Trek :D

Thats a fantastic piece...might come in handy if your ever sing Klingon opera! Thanks so much for posting your process also!
Really love your display!
(P.S: Your Kal-toh game caught my eye; I really want to try my hand at one of those some day.)

Awesome job! I've been wanting to add this to my collection as well. What's the estimate on material costs?

One nerdy note: many people call this a Klingon concertina or accordion, thanks for using the correct term (May'Ron).

Thanks for the encouragement folks :)

I think we'll see this in all it's glory detail when DS9 gets a Remastered Treatment ;)

Here's hoping .......

Thats a fantastic piece...might come in handy if your ever sing Klingon opera!

The only thing singing operas at the moment is my back from so much bending over to make the folds of the bellows :lol

What's the estimate on material costs?

Wood strip $9, Clay packet $3, Cardboard $0.50, Fur bracelets $4, total $16.50 . Paint & sandpaper 'from available stock' :lol
