WIP: Daft Punk (Thomas Bangalter) Tron Helmet Pepakura

I apologize in advance for the pace of this project and my future updates. The word "cold" doesn't begin to describe how freaking miserably freezing it has been around here, and the temperatures have been getting in the way of my outside work.

I am working on a Daft Punk Thomas helmet that I will hopefully be able to don for a few cons this year. The .pdo is the Dung0beetle tron helmet.

The chin/ mouth area didn't come out quite symmetrical in the pep, but I shot it with the heat gun and bent the helmet around a little bit until it was symmetrical. I also leveled out the ears a little bit with the heat gun since I opted to glue them on early on in the process, instead of glassing them separately and attaching them after I bondo'd the whole thing. I hope it doesn't come back to bite me in the ass, but I'm really hoping to work with a 1 piece helmet instead of 3 for this build.

It is hard to tell how off the chin is here, but it was noticeable enough...

I will try and update things as quickly as possible, but who knows...

So I'm finally done fiberglassing. There were a couple of soft spots where I picked up some air bubbles when I laid in the glass. I drilled through enough to fill the pockets with resin and that seems to have done the trick. If I were going to do this project again I would have glassed and bondo'd the ears and the helmet separately, as it was quite difficult laying the glass in the ears. I will let it cure and then cut in the mouth and nose holes tomorrow, and hopefully lay the first layer of bondo.

I'm not quite sure how I'm going to handle this, but you'll notice that the jaw line and the "shelf" below the visor is not even. I'm hoping I can plane that out in bondo. It was a problem with the original pep, but I had heated it and bent it back into shape when it was in the resin stage. It must have bent out of shape while it was curing under the heaters over the last few layers of fiberglass. Maybe I will clean it up a little bit and try to heat and bend it one last time before I move on to the bondo. I don't know... Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Note the right hand side of the photo- jawline and "shelf"

I can't remember right off the top of my head, but it was one of the Daft Punk forums out there.

I should really update this sometime. It's been sitting with one coat of bondo on it now for like 2 months though.

Have you made any progress on this? Nice pep work. The bondo part I found to be very laborious!

Yeah, the Bondo portion is a nightmare for sure. I got a couple layers of Bondo on the model before this one took a backseat to some of my bigger projects, unfortunately. So the progress that has been made isn't anything spectacular (it just looks orange instead of aqua). One of these days I really should finish this up... like before Daft Punk dies and is no more.

Thanks for the compliments, and thanks for looking though.
