Fallout 3: Plasma rifle build - Finished.

UPDATE: It's time for Glasgows 2014 comicon so the rifle has to be finished... it's DONE!

Flip to the end to see the final picture.

A couple of months ago I went to a comic-con in Glasgow UK and to my infinite regret never went in "cosplay". Resolving to go next year fully kitted up I decided that as I've played Fallout 3 for over 300 hrs (yes really!) I'd go as the famous "Lone Wanderer" which meant I'd obviously need a plasma rifle as to me this is the most symbolic item in the game.

Thanks are due to L05T V1K1N6 and his inspirational thread: http://www.therpf.com/f9/fallout-3-a3-21s-plasma-rifle-replica-156277/ for showing that it can be done so here is my attempt...

To plan my build I started with a scaled up printout of the plasma rifle, to get the right scale/size on the printout I took some of the base measurement from L05T V1K1N6's thread and also used the dimensions of my actual rifle stock to confirm these would be realistic (they were!).

Note: I've tried wherever possible to minimise any specialist building and just use everyday objects with a bit of modification for the build.

L05T V1K1N6 meticulously engineered his stock out of individual components. I don't have the tools or the skills to take this approach so opted for something simpler. I was also concerned that this component approach to the stock wouldn't be strong enough to survive a comic-con.

By electing to mock up the general outline of the stock in 6mm plywood and carve it out I was fully expecting it to NOT work and that I'd have to start over.

I basically glued all the shapes together to make a block form to carve out the detail stock from.

I started to shape the stock with some pretty brutal tools!

And actually it worked out OK. I stretched the length of the stock because it was too short for me. Here it is essentially finished:

* The stock is really strong and in close-up looks quite pretty being laminated. Shame to paint!

Part 2:

I made the handle from some hardwood that was lying around and finished it with part of a pushfit 15 mm plumbing fitting to take the tube.

The pink things lying there in the picture are parts of two pencil sharpeners destined to become a Micro Fusion cell!

In parallel I was also working on the barrel. I don't know if Bethesda meant this but pretty much all of the barrel components can be made to exact scale from commonly available ABS plumbers pipe sizes! In this pic I've glued in various tube fittings and even my coffee cup helped out with the chamfered profile for front end of the barrel, the lid fitted exactly here.

Here I've made up the receiver and the fore-end and mocked it up with the barrel and the 1st tube.

Part3:

I started to build the detail on the barrel with various fittings. I used dowels for the "valves" and again a visit to the plumbing section of the DIY store found the bases for the "portholes". Unfortunately I was stumped on how to create the correct apertures on the portholes so ended up using a hole cutter on an old vinyl record to get the right sizes!

The hosing came from a fishpond supplier...

So cutting to the chase here's all the building work done:

That's as far as I've got so far. Now I've got to warm up my airbrush and work on some of the finer detail.

Lighting wise I've got a 5mw laser designator from my rifle to give some green glow in the barrel which I plan to add some "sparkle" to with a diffusing lens and perhaps some fibre optic cable.

Comments welcome!

TBC...

Insane TBC. Looking forward to when this baby is finished! What are you going to use for paint?

A general purpose plastic/all surfaces grey primer first. After that I am probably going to be using enamels. I've worked with these quite a lot (railway/airplane modelling) and the stock of railway paints I have include some pretty cool weathering paint effects.

I need to paint the tubes (which are flexible) so am needing suggestions for that work.

Re: Fallout 3: Plasma rifle build

Ah okay, I was wondering what the final coats would be...

I would recommend Kylon Fusion Paint for the tubes and PVC. With the PVC, make sure to sand the pipes down wiht some 220 or greater grit sand paper. Also, put 2-3 light coats on the PVC, not just 2 thick ones (my experience!). The flex tubes may be hard to sand, but since they are glossy, you may have some trouble getting the paint to adhear without sanding them. I don't know of any other product that may work... Best of luck!

Re: Fallout 3: Plasma rifle build

I use 00 Steel wool to sand my PVC, then I hit it with an alcohol wipe to get the dust and production residue off.

I would recommend Kylon Fusion Paint for the tubes and PVC.

I second this. I've had great luck with the Fusion brand.

As for your clear pipe, I wouldn't paint it at all. I'd use a small piece of plastic type wrapping paper (Like you'd wrap Christmas cookies in as a decorative gift). Cut it to fit the inside and a few drops of glue around the edges to keep in in place. You can scuff up the outside of the plastic tube to weather it, paint on some finer details, and not have to worry about making the green glowy interior uniform. You could probably get away with a simple flashlight to use as a light source as well.

Re: Fallout 3: Plasma rifle build

Thanks for the ideas. I'll check out the Krylon fusion paints. The clear barrel will remain clear as per the prototype:

Re: Fallout 3: Plasma rifle build

You could always incorporate some neon tint into a clear resin and create the green laser effect! May require some significant sculpting though!

Re: Fallout 3: Plasma rifle build

I saw from another build for the clear tube get a cheap water gun the long tube kind.

Re: Fallout 3: Plasma rifle build

Back from being on an oil rig and the first job was to take it all to bits and prep it for painting.

I also added some detail to the stock before this.

Here it is, disassembled and with the first coat of primer:

More to follow!

Re: Fallout 3: Plasma rifle build - Almost finished!

Hi!

I wanted to post a quick update before Christmas got going - so here it is, nearly finished:

Some of the detail is complete but there's still a fair bit of fine paintwork to go. I wanted to put it back together again though to make sure that it was still hanging together OK and that I wasn't overdoing some of the paintwork (i.e. the weathering etc).

One thing that hasn't worked out so good is that the body still looks quite "woody/grainy" this despite (I can assure you!) quite a bit of fine sanding and filling prior to painting. It was almost as if the paint has actually highlighted the woods grain.

Not to worry as a prop to take to a Comic-Con I think it's worked out OK!

Re: Fallout 3: Plasma rifle build - Almost Finished!

I love the style of the fallout games and this is looking fantastic, looking forward to seeing it with its final paint job.

Re: Fallout 3: Plasma rifle build - Almost Finished!

P.S. I've used Acrylic paints so far with spray can, for the stock and airbrush for the barrel and other components. Acrylics have good flexibility on the hoses.

Re: Fallout 3: Plasma rifle build - Almost Finished!

Very well done, sir!!! Very well done, indeed. You've made me very proud on this one! Excellent job and keep up the good work!
