Hi All

What a wonderful forum.
I am so addicted to this forum. and My new fave hobby is building on my iron man suit. I have been building scaled models for the past 16 years. Cars, mecha, gundams, resins and anime models. I found my love in gundam/gunpla building but since I started my iron man suit. I was blown away and this is my new love.

I got to thank everyone who provided info and the pep files and most of ALL Stealth. The files and top was great and his video really helped.

My Plan was just to build a bust. so helmet, neck and chest/back for halloween. but it turns out I have built all the way down to the abs.

Anyway I will post what I have done so far and I hope you think it's ok.
I will add more photos when I get the off the camera

I started with some camping mat/ eva foam as I have seen people use this on youtube.

I had to test it out :p

was taking some new facebook profile pictures :p

turns out the Material was Shockingly *****!!
so I had to buy some decent stuff

This new stuff is 1000 better than the cheap EVA mat

I re-made the helmet as the first one was so bad, then I started on the neck

Started on the chest

Got more supplies

Slightly messed up on the biceps :(

Started on the hands

This was my old fiber glass helmet which I re-sprayed

Testing the armour for the first time

It's a little big/loose for my liking. I am only 5'7. I should of scaled it down a little but the chest seemed to fit at first so I thought they would all fit with a little mod. abit too late to go back now :(

more pics coming soon

Looking really good. :)
I'm also from the UK and I'm planning to build one of these in small (to get the techniques right) for my son and then go full scale for me.
So I have a question for you. I am having difficulty finding the right foam in the UK so where did you get yours from?
I was also going to go down the camping mat route so I'm glad I read your post first. :)

At the moment I have bought the Plastazote from thames vally supplies. it works out to be about £37ish delivered for one 2m x 1m x 10mm sheet. 1 sheet allowed me to build all the above pictures.

I have done abit more research and have found a place which is cheaper. I paid for it yesterday and it should get here today or tomorrow latest. when I do get it I will check the quality of the foam and see if it's the same stuff as I got before (even tho it's listed as the same as thames) If it is the same then it works out ALOT cheaper and I will advise you where to go. This company was £68 for 3 sheets of 2m x 1m x 10mm. Thats enough to make about 2 full adult suits :)

I found that scale's are different for each piece. In my build i had to use 1 scale for chest abs cod, and then totally different for arms, and another one for the legs. Even though the file's where all from the same person. Measuring is the way to go!

very clean build :)

Thanks guys. Yeah I now noticed the abs (even tho I have shorten it) so it's now not so wide, it doesn't sit inside the chest and back armour. I had to lengthen the straps another 1cm each side to get the chest over the abs. I will need to scale down the thighs and legs down. I just hope I wont look too out of place

Hey man I was wondering, you mentioned a different supplier for plastizote but didn't say where. If you could share that would be great.
Oh the suit looks awesome btw :)

Looks amazing! Nice work. Can't wait to see more progress.

I've got a few things on the go at the minute but i'd love to give something of this scale a go.

Will have to buy some Plastazote .

How is the density of the plastizote ep82? I've built 2 full suits out of the camping mat foam but want to try an alternative which doesn't bend and flex as easily.

The Plastazote I used is LD45. I noticed you can pretty much dent the camping mats with your finger nails if you run it along softly. The Plastazote is really good stuff. it doesn't really dent unless you dig in. I also found that the dinks and dents comes back out over time. it stiffer than the soft camping foam but if you add heat then it will bend quite abit.

Looking great dude,

going to make a start on my first build shortly, do you have the Pepakura files you have used?

Simon
The pep files I used were from robo/stealth

Hey dude. yeah I got a different supplier for the plastazote, it works out to be £67 for 3 sheets of 2m x 1m x 10mm. I paid for it on tuesday evening but they have only shipped it out today. if should be here tomorrow, once I have checked the foam. I will post up details :) I don't want to give false details and false hope.

more photos.

Final shots before sealing and painting

Sealed with 3-4 layers of PVA

Painted. The colour is too bright on photos. The real colour is more deep dark red with a matallic shine like the movie

Added padding to protect from rubbing

All together

Testing the Armour for the very first time after painted.
Are you ready?

:D Just taking a time out :p

Did you use anything to stiffen the foam before painting? I would worry too much that the foam would flex and make the paint flake off. It might be that I worry too much though.

The key I have come to realise with foam builds is to use a paint which will flex with the foam, I sealed with PVA and used cheap spray paints for my first build, when the foam flexes the paint cracks, it doesn't flake off, a flexible rubber based paint is what I intend on trying next.

What paint did you use ep82, your build looks awesome.

I love the Mario Kart inspired photos!

Is there any significance to the Gameboy in the build photos, or it it a secret? :)

I've never really tried a foam build so I'll be interested to see how it turns out.

Good luck, and thanks for the photos you sent over to me.
