1/50 scale Planet Express Ship, Futurama

hey all! Sorry for the radio silence, I've spent the last two months (!!) moving into a new workshop/studio and building things like new workbenches and a massive spray booth.

That's all wrapped up and finished now so I can finally get back to this project.

Most notably I've got the electronics sorted out. I designed a small break out board for an Arduino mini that can drive 7 LED channels at 500mA per channel. This will run the pulsing engine lights as well as the indicators on the wing tips.

Here's one set of engine LEDs. Blue illumination, and there's a small spacer in there to make sure they sit in the thruster openings centered.

I also molded sections of the wing tips and cast them in clear resin. The wings themselves had these parts trimmed off and were drilled out for a wire to run through the wing body. This was a huuuuge pain on the top stabilizer, since it's less than 1/4" thick toward the tip of the fin.

The last part I had to make was a little moon base, sculpted in soft clay, for the ship to sit on and hide the power supply wiring. This has since been molded and cast in resin. A recessed plug will sit in the front landing strut for the power input.

That's about it for the big steps forward. I've got everything in primer and I'm just waiting on a shipment of paint to come in before I can put some color on these guys. More progress soon!

SHUT UP AND TAKE MY.... well you know the Fry jpeg as well as the next guy, lol.....

AWESOME. I love your workspace.

Excellent work, I love the work shop too, did you make the spray booth or re-purposed it from some thing else?

When this goes to kit stage I am in.

Spray booth is my design, built from references I gathered of similar booths and built a bit more to my specs. You can check out the gallery of the project here: Spraybooth - a set on Flickr

I'll be doing a write up on that on my blog soon, and I'll be making the build specifications available later on if people want to make one of their own. It ain't cheap, but it's damn nice to have!

Thanks guys! Things are moving fast now, I should have everything painted by mid next week.

Here's the smaller/base coat stuff coming together.

Windshield is painted first, I'll mask this off when I do the green later on.

I'll need to sand out the insides of the engines before painting them, but thats the last step. The interior nozzle is a darker gray than the rest of the engine so that will be done with a brush at the last stage.

Messing around with some left over contrasting colors for the base. This will be painted with a flat clear once the weathering is done.

Dude I would be all over this as a model. What are the measurements of the ship?

She's a little over 2 feet long from nose to tip of tail fin. Wingspan about 12"; 9" tall. The base fits inside all these dimensions.
