3 foot tall lego minifig ... Making Frank an Operation Game, and adding animatronics

This year for Halloween, my wife decided she would like to decorate in a lego theme. We settled on recreating the Crazy Scientist and his Monster Lego set.

So today was the first day of the build, and i made pretty good headway on the hand and the head.

I plan on casting the head, the hands, and the arms since they are the most complicated pieces. The rest (torso, legs, hips) will all be made from MDF or plywood.

Neat idea, can't wait to see how it turns out.

A couple of other Rpf members have made larger scale lego figures. Search their thread for tips and hints how to make them.

Subscribed! Can't wait to see how this turns out.

Thanks, and me too. Due to wedding anniversary, going out of town this weekend, and family visiting next weekend, I don't expect to make a ton of progress until October :(

I might try to make a Lego Skeleton after i finish the other two guys and their props.

Re: 3 foot tall lego minifig

Finally got some time to put some work into these guys. I managed to make two more heads, two torsos, the hand smoothed out a bit, and started on the hip joints. Hopefully though next week and next weekend I can get the hips done and the legs built.

And yes, i know that the two new heads do not have the little nub on the top. This was not an oversight, both these guys have hair pieces that will cover the top of the heads, so I didn't really see the need to make the nubs.

Torso - the back of the torso will be held on with magnets. I wanted to have access to the inside for possible servos for animations.

Re: 3 foot tall lego minifig

Not a huge update today, but an update non-the-less. Finished constructions of the hip joint and got them all trimmed up. Just need to fill in some areas and they should be good to go for primer and final sanding. I also trimmed down the wrist on the hand component and filled in the wrist PVC with resin to make it solid. I did this so that i can mold it to cast all 4 (and future) hands.

Re: 3 foot tall lego minifig

Fairly productive weekend. Got a ton of work done on the arms, and started on the legs.

Arm Build:
Basic frame for the upper arm made form .75 mdf.

Green Floral foam as filler. The green floral foam does not react with the resins and bondo.

Making the wrist section.

Putting the two arm sections together.

Making sure the proportions are correct.

Starting the long process of filling and shaping.

Needs some more filling and sanding, but starting to come together.

And some leg parts.

He now has a leg to stand on. Fairly productive day, but to cold to use bondo, so I have to wait until tomorrow to start smoothing.

Re: 3 foot tall lego minifig

I had some help out in the garage today, my lovely wife pitched in and help sand and fill.

I had to modify the hip joints by moving the pivot points. Apparently i did not get the rotation point of the legs centered. Not sure what happened. I removed the PVC joint out of the hip, made the hole larger, re positioned the PVC joint, and held it in place with Bondo. Worked real well.

He can stand on his own 2 feet. They grow up so fast.

Started Priming, I still need to get some of the lumps out of the arms. Those still have a ways to go. I did finally order my silicon and smooth cast to reproduce the arms and hand. they should be delivered this week. I ordered all my resins from The Engineer Guy ... He is based in Atlanta; I used to work for him, and he is a super stand up guy. In fact, in my ignorance, I had placed an order for the wrong mold release and they sent me an email asking if that was really what i wanted and were able to recommend the proper mold release for silicon. Always looking out for their customers.

And I finished off the day by sealing the raw ends of the cut MDF with fiberglass resin (the dark wet looking areas). Hopefully this will help with sanding and prevent the mdf for absorbing the paint.

Re: 3 foot tall lego minifig

Looking at the few photos from today it doesn't look like i got a lot accomplished today. But in reality I did a ton of work. Got all the legs, the two arms, one head, and the hand filled, smoothed, and primed. Still a few little imperfections here and there, but all in all I am happy with the way they are turning out. My arm hurts for sanding so much.

Loving this so much! I’d love love love to have a 80s lego spaceman like this.
