Dishonored Corvo Attano Mask and Costume

Ok,first post here, so be gentle with me! I have been lurking on these boards for a while, mainly looking trying to get inspiration for costumes which have been finished to varying degrees of success. I have recently started work on Corvo Attanos mask from Dishonored.
Corvo-Attano.jpg

I decided to create this by sculpting it and then casting it, now this is the first sculpting and casting I have ever done so I am expecting it to go horiffically wrong! So far the only equipment I have got is a polystyrene head, 2 blocks of super sculpey (beige because it was cheaper!) and some cheap wooden sculpting tools.

Since nowhere in my local town seemed to sell blank masks and I didn't want to wait and order one online, I made my own out of tin foil:

So as you can see, I am already off to the best start I could be! :facepalm So I started working with the super sculpey (don't forget, never touched this stuff before!) and after two hours had something vaguely resembling the right footprint of the mask.

2 hours work... this was clearly going well :behave

Two evenings later (this is going to be a slow build by the way!) and it was starting to look a lot better, and I was starting to get a hell of a lot more comfortable sculpting and rather enjoying it too!

20130813_212717.jpg20130815_220024.jpg
So that is what I had to start work with last night, then I picked it up again and spent the next 4 hours sat on the floor and actually started to use the tools I had bought too. This is what I have now:

So, what do you guys think? are there any pitfalls I should be looking out for? I was also wondering what is best for smoothing super sculpey and if I should bake it before casting it? I read that it is best to get it exactly how you want it before baking as it's difficult to sand after this?

As a side note, after seeing all these pictures together, beige clay looks horrible!

I can't offer any help as I haven't used that stuff for sculpting but yours is looking great.

Re: Dishonored Corvo Attano mask WIP

Since you're sculpting a mask you should not use polymer clays but oil based clays ( choose a very hard clay ), polymer clay is used to make small models or action figures not to sculpt a big masks like corvo's one. So you should definitely need an oil based clay to get good results. Use water as smoother and you should be able to sculpt the entire mask without particular tools.
Hope it helps :)
i use prochima degas 90

Re: Dishonored Corvo Attano mask WIP

I think I am about done with the sculpting side of things! Can anybody see any areas I need to improve upon? I have attempted to get it as acurate as possible but I think my head is the wrong shape.

Does anybody have any suggestions on how to make the cogs? I was thinking maybe use some thick card, cut them out of that and then cast in resin? I will probably do these seperate so that they can be attached at a later date.

Sauer, thanks for the info. i did want to use monster clay to make it but I found that getting the clay shipped here cost more than the clay itself! I am happy using Sculpey at the moment, seems to be doing the job.

Am planning on using this stuff to make a mould, does that seem ok?

Now adding the details, started to make the cogs which I am going to make out of craft foam and then cast in resin, the glue on the foam is just drying then I can see how it works. Hopefully get more done at the weekend

Re: Dishonored Corvo Attano mask WIP

Ok, didn't actually get much done this weekend, but I got the basic shapes of the cogs done. They will need extras adding on to make them extra specially steam punky though.

So what I did was get some thick card and glue it onto some craft foam to get some depth, some of the pieces are quite thick. I then drew the outlines and scanned them in to be able to flip them easily and print them out.
Scan.jpg
Then I cut these out and glued them onto the card/foam concoction
988992_10153201339640038_1218082349_o.jpg
chop chop and glue glue ended up with these:
1231531_10153209532310038_1159975360_o.jpg
The ones on the left are sort of assembled, the ones on the right are the individual parts. There are other bits to attach too, but i lost some of them so will need to re-chop some bits. Now I just need to work out a way of rounding the edges and smoothing them out before I can cast them.

I also spent a bit of time adding a few details onto the cast, I cut out some of the flat cog things whatever they are called and put them between the halves of the mask, making sure to fill out with clay underneath them so that I can cast them properly. I also cut out a small pattern that goes in the circular bit on the forehead and put that in and used clay to level it off to the edges.

So one last thing on the actual mask itself besides smoothing it out again is to find some kind of piping type thing that goes down the right hand side of the mask, it is just a case of finding something the appropriate size.

On Friday (payday! yay!) I will be getting my silicone and resin, I will be getting TinSil 7020 and EasyFlo 120 unless anybody has any other suggestions, bearing in mind i am based in the UK and don't like paying for things!

Re: Dishonored Corvo Attano mask WIP

Ok, so spent the weekend moulding the mask, set myself up a nice little work station here to do my dirty work at!
1231474_10153248526265038_427154664_o.jpg
I ended up buying the smooth-on starter brush on kit, it was a bit cheaper than buying everything separately.
1226874_10153251380990038_1655020995_o.jpg
Ok, so did a few coats of liquid rubber, and in all of the reading I have been doing, nobody anywhere said anything about how horrible it is to coat a piece you have worked on in a gooey mess! So I am leaving it here for posterity in case anybody else reads this!
1353525_10153256704205038_1616580871_o.jpg
Mother shell on, this was the most satisfying part I must admit, getting nice and messy. When I peeled this off i realised, I had not bought anywhere near enough liquid rubber for a project this size... but Oh well! too late to do anything about it now as the mask has been pretty much destroyed when removing the silicone.
1020471_10153256712070038_1271067836_o.jpg1353753_10153257473795038_1800062690_o.jpg
So, I also poured a load of silicone over my cog pieces to make a mould of them, I will probably cast these first as they are small and easy to make certain that I have done it right.

Bit of a problem, the first detail coat of silicone I put on wasn't mixed properly, so there is a bit of goo on the inside of the mould, however I don't anticipate this to be a problem as the it actually leaves a bit of a mottled effect, and the mask is supposed to be battered and bruised a bit anyway!

Essay done!
Next stop will be modelling the jaws, will post a picture of them but wont bother with the whole process
TTFN!

Re: Dishonored Corvo Attano mask WIP

Ok, quick update but quite a big one! I slush casted all of the parts, I had a few pieces where I hadn't mixed the plastic properly so had to re-cast them, but it all turned out ok! pulled my mask and ended up with this:
1373970_10153315887040038_560287487_o.jpg
I quickly painted the backs of the pieces before realising I should have glued them together BEFORE painting... but oh well! meant I had to score the surfaces to ensure a good grip and then attached them in place:
1369900_10153325915080038_1525468108_o.jpg1375562_10153326301575038_1335360877_o.jpg
So from the picture, you can clearly see that the left hand jaw is waaaaay too low, so I had to carve out lots of hot glue with a heated knife to re-attach it. I sliced two of my fingers in the process.

Anyway, I am now up to here:
1382514_10153334416840038_75991875_o.jpg
I have used black spray paint to coat the entire piece before using silver and gold paint to dry brush over it. I just need to make the lens frames to attach on the inside before I finish the paint job and attach them to the main mask.

It's all coming together!

P.S. no idea why the pictures aren't showing properly...

Re: Dishonored Corvo Attano mask WIP

Ok, not updated in a while, but I will put more progress on for now.
So, after spray painting it all black I realised I should have glued it together first, so I had to scrape a load of paint off and then assemble it:
1379008_10153353905265038_317331210_n.jpg
I then started painting it by painting a piece of kitchen roll and then dabbing it over for the main bits of metal, then used a dry brush for the copper bits
1370193_10153354692790038_1833993733_n.jpg1378918_10153354708985038_1114012256_n.jpg
Once it was all painted I put some cling film over the inside and then slid some hessian inside and cut it to roughly the right shape.
972767_10153354931315038_931166010_n.jpg
Started to really get excited at this point, it was looking how i imagined. The reason for the cling film was this:
1396637_10153375236310038_364513854_n.jpg
I used a mix of PVA glue, paint and water to soak the hessian so that when it dried it would hold the shape and hopefully darken the hessian a little bit.

After spending a day on the floor sewing red fabric on the back, putting clips on and wiring the mouth shut I got to an almost finished stage

Re: Dishonored Corvo Attano mask WIP

Looks awesome, can't wait to see it in full getup!

Cheers! I think the whole get up will be a long time coming, especially all the accessories since they will be the most expensive, but don't worry, it will definitely happen!

Dig it. Did you have to seal the clay before molding?

I didn't have to seal the clay, i'm not sure if I should have or not as when I took the silicone off the clay had turned quite dry but I was still able to re-work it to use it again just not as easily. I was actually surprised by how much I enjoyed working with the clay since I have never sculpted before I was expecting it to be a disaster, but the super sculpey was very forgiving of mistakes. I thought I was going to have to bake it before taking a mould but luckily didn't have to otherwise I wouldn't have had a polystyrene head left!

So I did a few more photos, it's effectively finished, I doubt I will be doing any more work on this now as it's hung on the wall! i did take a video but it was rubbish so I will probably try again. The inside is both decorative, but also keeps the mask on the face properly, so the strap can just hold it up.

Re: Dishonored Corvo Attano mask WIP

awesome mask! are you still able to see clearly out of it or is it all tunnel vision?

Re: Dishonored Corvo Attano mask WIP

the vision is fine through the left eye, but the right eye is pretty much just a point of light. To put it simply, I wouldn't want to go on a night out wearing it!
