Two Captain America Heater Shields (pic heavy)

I got bit by the heater shield bug bad. Here's the result. Both are laser-cut and rolled aluminum stock. Thick. almost a quarter-inch thick. The brackets and leather on both are my design. Not screen-accurate, but I like them.

The first is an attempt at a screen-accurate USO shield. The client (my son) wanted it pristine. Not battle-scarred. He also wanted the cue cards on the back. The cards are scans of the original cue cards found on an auction site. The back is gold to match the movie shield.

For the second shield (mine) I wanted to do something different that I hadn't seen anyone tackle: Cap's first shield design, with the blue stripes. In Marvel canon it's called the Smithsonian shield. I also wanted to do a heater shield with the Dupilcolor Metalcast anodized paints. So it's sort of an amalgam of the movie mythology and comic book mythology. It turned out really well. The Metalcast paint is fun to work with.

Both were a ton of fun, but a ton of work. Clear coat always kicks my butt. I had to strip and start again on both at least once cause I rushed the clearcoat.

One's going on my son's bedroom wall, the other in the basement :)

Well, short answer: A whole bunch. A single shield would cost several hundred. I got mine at a reduced rate because the metal shop traded services .... okay, they wanted their own shield for their shop :)

Nice. I'm working on a USO suit (the first appearance of Steve in the Cap suit when doing the musical in TFA) and obviously it wouldn't be complete without a heater shield.

You don't happen to know the correct size and measurements for it do you? It would be a fantastic help.

Thanks, Valor.

Attached is a pdf of the shield I produced, which was based off measurements of the screen-used shield.

Really beautiful heater shield.
I'm still wondering wether or not I should try to get one or if I should end my "shield frenzy" with a stealth WS shield ...

Valor, you've inspired me to do my own heater shield build, based on your design. Got an estimate today from a local fabrication shop for the bare shield in 6061 - unpolished with the edges not milled (I can finish the edges and polish myself) - affordable enough for me to buy one, maybe two. Any chance you could provide more details about the brackets? Specifically - dimensions, and how they're attached?

Gotta give you credit, those shields of yours are superior.

Thanks for you kind words. The brackets are cut from the same aluminum as the shield. Each was 3.5" x 7".

Good luck with your build.

Steve

hey Steve - any chance you have your original shield dimension image in dxf or dwg format? Fabrication shop guy is asking. If you do, I'd be happy to return the favor somehow.

btw, I've decided to go with a variation on your strap mounts: 6061 bar stock with OE 1" riveted slides from atthefront.com, then JB Weld the parts to the shield back. Got some more ideas for the handle leather. My machinist buddy is telling me to go for countersunk bolts, but he tends to bail on me halfway through my projects. Unfortunately, I don't have shop equipment in my apartment.

"Thank you for your support."
