Star Trek Beyond

Remember the first time we see Sulu he is flower arranging, that famous manly pursuit.

As for JJ Sulu being closeted, why do we assume he was?

Its the 23rd century, being gay would be so not that big a deal, that he wouldn't need to be closeted, just because he never mentioned being gay does not mean he wasn't.

Also we are 15 years into the 21st century, it shouldn't be a big deal today either.

I work with gay people, are friends with gay people, and if my son turned out to be gay, I would still love him as much as I do now.

Yeah, there was no indication that he would be closeted. That would actually be working backwards.

you just insulted the great and powerful boothby. shame on you. 20 laps around starfleet academy now.

My take on Sulu, he is an explorer, he is a pilot. I think he was married to the stars, his place was aboard a starship and going as far as anyone could ever go and as fast as they could get there. I don' think of him as family guy either way. His plants kept him company far from earth. Some folks just don't necessarily end up married or need someone. I know people like that, they aren't gay, they just are not wired to couple up. Diversity would mean you have people like that too! History has a lot of people like that, they just never hooked up with anyone, they were so busy making history. I'm aware of the daughter in the one film of course, but I like my take better.

Exactly. I know a lot of aviation types who dont 'settle down'. Aviation attracts the type of person who is a 'little gypsy' for the lack of a better term. Flame suit on.....Most women are nesters, they want to have the career, house, family etc. I see a lot of the aviation gals who are ok with going away for weeks at a time. Some have family's, some dont. But most give up the 'jetting away' life once the first kid hits the tarmac.

As far as Sulu being gay, who cares. We all knew he was and welcome him out of the closet......assuming the automatic doors work properly.

So let me get this straight (if you'll pardon the pun), you are quite happy to see a gay actor play a straight character (Quinto), but freak out when a straight actor plays a gay character?

Or is it because is because you think if a man you have known all your life who shows no signs of being gay, is actually gay, then anyone could be?

Newsflash, anyone could be.

I'm not fussed that they've made Sulu gay as such. It just annoys me when people change things about known character for the point of changing things trying to freshen things up. And I know people are saying there was no definitive proof that TOS Sulu wasnt homosexual but I do remember him and Checkov at the end of star trek the final frontier following the Klingon second in command around commenting on her. Now read into that what you will. Did Sulu like her cos she was a strong woman... or cos she was muscular and tall like a....

Well as I say, Make of that what you will. But they could have had a new character introduced in the first jjtrek and held back his or her sexuality until this Movie, therefore not having it the only thing peoole think about for that character but also pleasing fans of the original. That being said I am a fan of the originals and I wont be going to see it as ive not been that impressed with the last 2 movies so I'll wait till it comes on the boob tube.

I just cant get on board (no pun intended) with Chris ********* Pine as Kirk.

I don't know about the other people, but I'm upset because they keep messing with pretty much everything.
Kirk: In the original series and movies he was mostly responsible, although early on he was quick to shoot first and ask questions later. The new Kirk should not be allow to command an escort ship.
Spock: Shot down nurse Chapel. New Spock is all over Uhura.
Uhura: See Spock above.
Chekov: Should still be in the academy or even Space Highschool.
Sulu: The only times they showed him having any sexual interest was for Uhura. Granted, that was the "mirror universe".

The only character that hasn't been messed with is Bones. He will probably be next.

And then they keep screwing with the universe in general. Half the ship is now a brewery. A decent size hole and they'll lose half the ships atmosphere. And now it's possible to transport from Earth to Klingon territory? I suppose in the next movie they will encounter the Nexus and new Kirk can work with New Picard to stop New Soran.

At least they are not doing like Next Generation or Enterprise and having a different "radiation of the week".

don't point out plot points. you'll make people think too much.

These are NEW characters in a DIFFERENT universe! Stop comparing them to TOS.

Then they should have created NEW characters with DIFFERENT names.

The Wook

Perhaps but I have no issue with them being the same name and archetypes as established by GR but with a new spin. Why is that so hard for people to get their heads around is Beyond me. See what I did there? :)

Y'see... this is where I have a problem with nuTrek defenders.
Whaddya mean 'stop comparing them to TOS'? The whole premise of this parallel-reboot-verse is built on the fact that we all know these characters from TOS. They went to ludicrous, plot/logic-defying lengths to get all the same officers on the same ship at the same time. They have Nimoy|Spock point out what he knows about nuSpock and nuKirk because of what he knows of his own time. The whole build-up was beating us over the head with these being TOS characters.

And so... when they throw radical changes like Kirk being an *******, Uhura being a needy girlfriend, Khan being white, starships being 400% bigger (with 20th century breweries in), transporters that can beam across the galaxy and onto warping ships (because of some numbers from the future typed into a 100 years-older system) and magic blood that cures death... that's where we feel we're being sold inferior merchandise.
Throw in the new films' obsession with pop songs, cars, lens-flares, explosions, and all of JJ's un-funny in-jokes and you can forgive some of us for having lost faith in those in charge.

It's fine if you don't like these films or character iterations, we have plenty of old content to serve that need. Personally I consider this a reboot and having no connection to what came before. I think it was a mistake to try and connect the two universes and include old Spock. But that doesn't prevent me from enjoying what they have made and being a bit more flexible in my thinking to let these characters be something new and different. You have a choice, be pedantic and closed minded or willing to accept some new rules. You can still not like the films but I think people are far to precious in regards to these characters and GR vision for them.

I for one don't care what they do with the characters, as far as I'm concerned these movies (thankfully) have no connection to anything that came before and are part of some totally separate logic and intelligence challenged universe that will hopefully collapse upon itself and die. I don't consider myself close minded at all I just don't have any interest in generic summer fluff action movies that they stuck the Star Trek name on.

At first I was all for NuSulu being gay. I thought that it was a good move and something that Star Trek needed after all these years. Plus it was my headcannon for years.

But when Takei said that they shouldn't have and gave good reasons why, I changed my mind.
And since then, the producers and Pegg et al have been saying some really dumb things. Like for instance saying that it was a "a tribute for George" after they consulted him and he advised them not to. Or saying things like "it would be too difficult to add a gay character."
I think that they really tried to do this to gain headlines for a movie the public didn't really care about, and now its kinda being shown up as the cynical marketing move it was by the usual studio ham-handedness.

Ya know - I've watched the trailer a few times and I still see very little I'm interested in seeing in this movie. I found the first two new Trek movies to be very meh affairs - they both had moments, although they were few and far between. I didn't hate them - I just wanted more substance over style.

Just some random thoughts... I still don't like Chris Pine as Capt. Bighead Kirk - even John Cho seems a forced choice as Sulu.. and to some extent even Simon Pegg as Scotty. Karl Urban nailed it - even Anton Yelchin worked for me (having been a fan of Charlie Bartlett) - Quinto and Saldana were acceptable, but never really did much to make either character their own. The new Enterprise was far too stylized... and Khan storyline was butchered all to hell. I guess the new timeline was creative and inventive enough of a reason for the reboot.

So this trailer comes out - and I've seen every Trek film opening weekend since at least TWOK - and I'm still not sold, not even close. The new trailer just looked like more bland, homogenized JJ-Trek... the worst crime of all? They show us they're destroying the Enterprise - ugh.

The early reviews have been mostly positive - some saying it's much more Trek-like. I can only hope they're right - just based on the lukewarm buzz on this, it's looking like this might be the last go round of the big E and this cast and storyline... but, I'll be there, even if @Bryancd isn't offering to buy my ticket, hoping for the best...
