Re: Neill Blomkamp's Chappie
I haven't read the actual manga, but I read about it and saw some of the art from Battle Angel Alita when Elysium was in production. And I wondered did people really believe the allegory of modern economic class system depicted under science fiction settings should be credited only to Battle Dark Anita from 1990?
Elysium's genesis was based mainly on the concept art of the space station designed by Syd Mead in the 1980s. That image is what inspired Blomkamp and Mead was brought on board for Elysium as well.
Neon Genesis Evangelion fans were upset over similar reasons when Pacific Rim got released. As if the mecha genre was restricted to that sole anime.
The universe of BAA appears to be more vast and still viable for a feature film if somebody decides to do so. Cameron now won't do it cause he wants to do only Avatar till the next decade. NGE will likely get done under guidance of the Weta team when another studio decides to back the film.
(I promise I'm done with the negative posts here.)
Oh man, no such promise needed. If we all agree on everything, the discussion remains stagnant without alternating unique viewpoints.
I just felt the reason for the negativity seemed too much just cause of one aspect of design similarity. But you now mentioning Pinocchio, I can see why it might be about more resemblance in other themes to Appleseed, even though that theme itself is vastly used in other creations.
Since you are a fan of those properties, I do understand why you feel these films are undermining their possible future adaptations.
