Skyrim Dragonplate Armor

SIlicone thickness - couple coats. Coverage seems to be more important than thickness.

Did the shoulders in a better scale, lower detail this time

Finished up the models, banged out the belt plates.

I'll use foamies over the ring to get the bone inlay, as well as form the inset section.

The front and back bone segments are sitting ready to assemble on my desk, then I'll be rebuilding the helmet at a tighter-fitting scale.

rough paint tests, dark brown and blacks. Need to get a beige or lighter brown.

Mucked with the shoe parts today, slushed and peeled them. Used some mold release, that and the thicker silicone coats made tearing the paper off a breeze.

And it wasn't sticking. Forgot to rough up the back of the plates, whoops.

So I built the helmet, too big. Then I built it at the right scale.

Then I burned the wrong scale(used acetone).

Resined and reinforced. Used some synthetic loose-weave fabric.

Then I sketched up where the different sections of foam would go, and dremeled down errant fibers..

The thin craft foam is.. most importantly, cheap as hell, and when applied correctly smoothes polygons down.

.. some time later..

Also added a few layered strips inside and over contact areas, around edges.

Now it's time to do some weathering/slicing, some elmer's to seal the foam up, and paint.

AMAZING! The amount of work you are putting into this is astounding. What a great happy accident with the brush strokes. after sanding down you have a realy great texture. Subscribed!

Super-quick pre-dragoncon crunch-time up-date -

Things are getting done, I have most parts cast, reinforced, and rough-sanded.

103_0200.JPG by vrogy, on Flickr

The arm-bands got patterned, assembled, textured, formed, coated, and painted.

103_0190.JPG by vrogy, on Flickr

Detail areas are being quickly patterned with transparencies and added, textured, coated.

103_0202.JPG by vrogy, on Flickr

Hands are exactly half rough-sanded.

Not sure if I'll have time to properly groove the lace indentions here.

I love the textures on the bone and the hammered iron, and the technique of using different coloured foam is really quite cool. Not only for the effect but also for seeing the contrast between different areas. I'm loving watching this come together. Inspiring!

After getting some sleep, here's the run-down.
Got a flawed sword casting from yodajammies / jarman props sometime monday/tuesday

Quick job of foam-skinning and texturing the belt parts:

Put the sides' texture right into the smoothcast, thought they might get roughed up a bit more

103_0226.JPG by vrogy, on Flickr

Forearm details on, textured, masked off for sealant and paint

I found that if you're careful, great stuff foam comes out pretty evenly

Waiting on some photos from our Sunday Skyrim shoot at Hardy Ivy park, I'll post those when they're out, but here's a quick informal shot from jarman props:

The tabs-out Pep-then slush cast idea is brilliant. First time I've heard of it, but I fully intend to work it into my future builds. Especially for weapons calling for a more agro look. Great job on the armor!
