RANCOR Sculpt FINISHED PAGE 7!

Re: RANCOR Sculpt

I replaced the legs on the build because they were slightly too short. - I've made a bit of progress here, looking okay and I love the pose... still a ton of work to do - the face is only temporary at the moment. Criticism very welcome!

What does everyone think of the proportions? Any areas that raise alarm bells?

Cheers,
Chris

Oh yeah, the fingers obviously need fleshing out...

Re: RANCOR Sculpt

I'm no Rancor expert, but that's looking spot on to me, Chris. I love the turn of the head, pose looks dynamic... I'm well impressed. How're you getting on with working with the Monster Clay?

Al

Re: RANCOR Sculpt

Thanks Alan, I'm really enjoying the clay now.
Monster clay has taken a while to get used to it but I think it gets to that stage where the novelty of working with something new wears off and you stop worrying about how it is looking - your concentration is focused on proportion and observation, and then the clay starts working with you.

After taking these photos I realised that the head was flattened and squared off on top. I melted a big hunk of clay to round the top off and it looks a million times better for it. Stay tuned! BTW, have you had a good mess around with it since getting the alcohol torch?

Re: RANCOR Sculpt

I think it's looking great! I am glad you opted for a different pose than that of the Hasboro Rancor. It makes it interesting to see a little more extension of the neck. And I am glad Alaneye asked about the monster clay, cause I am getting some on the 15th to start playing with. (If you make a mold of this I am sure I wouldn't be alone to want lots of pics and a description of the process. Keep up the good work! :)

Re: RANCOR Sculpt

I've progressed a little bit. I was initially working from Gentle Giant images but I started to feel that ethically I was kinda just ripping off someone else's work, which I didn't think was fair. Also, the GG version is a little idealised when compared to the screen version, so I basically stared working from the Blu Ray to create something a bit uglier and less symmetrical. I've also begun to bulk out the body considerably and I think the raw form is getting there. After that I will start refining the details.

The teeth were made from sculpey and 'baked' with a blowtorch... I had to be careful that there were no undercuts with the teeth otherwise casting would turn out to be a nightmare.

So what do we think? - Any problem areas?

Cheers,
Chris

Re: RANCOR Sculpt

Yeah, I see one main problem area, in that I want to see this further along :D I love the face already... it's going to be pretty spectacular I think.

May I start by saying the head sculpture is amazing. Great talent

Re: RANCOR Sculpt

Wow, that Rancor is definitely looking beastly. Even where it's at now, definitely unmistakable.

Re: RANCOR Sculpt

Thanks very much for all of your encouragement. I think my subscription didn't work properly for this thread so my apologies if I've not been responding. Cadeus - I hope you enjoy using the clay, I personally think it is remarkable stuff. I'll post pics of the casting progress (which I am dreading!)

So, here's another update. I scoured the net to find studio model reference pictures and also ripped some footage from 'Classic Creatures' which shows the Rancor in normal light. After compiling all the reference my sculpt did not look tall enough and so I spent ages tearing it to pieces and adding bits. The pictures will show a slight difference and although it doesn't look much further on, a hell of a lot of work has gone in. I'm now at the stage where I can begin refining the sculpture and adding rudimentary details.

^ So here he is with a little more work done to his face.

^ Close up on the face. It is not finished yet but I feel the form is about right. This sculpt really does rely on dramatic lighting!

^ This image shows the height I've added. It isn't a great deal but more akin to the studio model.

^ Texture experiment with the arm

^ and a bit of the hand done.

I'm taking my time with this sculpt - not really in a huge rush with it. Again, if anyone has any criticism please feel free to air your views. It is the reason I post! The tail needs lengthening yet, but overall I'm quite happy with him.

Thanks
Chris

Re: RANCOR Sculpt

Looking good Chris. It might just be the angle of the photo, but it looks as if you have altered the leg positions between pic 1 and pic 3? I like the leg positioning of pic 1 more then pic 3. In pic 3 he doesn't look as if his weight is distributed as well as in pic 1 and he kind of looks as if he will fall to the left if he stood like that for too long. The arm and especially the hand is looking really nicely detailed and organic.

Re: RANCOR Sculpt

Yeah I can see where you are getting at - I had to redo the legs at one point. I think the photo is at a weird angle but also the leg has shifted a little. I'll fix that because it does look better in the first photo. Thanks!
