It would probably also allow for easier access to certain parts of the TIE depending on how things are configured. If Imperial engineers are anything like real life engineers the guns and engines on the TIE are probably designed to be accessed and, if necessary, removed from the sides instead of straight out. If that were the case then removing the wings would make accessing those parts much, much easier even if it does mean that that sort of maintenance can't be done out in the field and would require a higher echelon depot to do the work.

Which novel? Darth Plagueis? That novel is no longer canon as you mentioned. I'm speaking strictly canon.

From the new canon:

When Maul was a child, Mother Talzin became an ally of Darth Sidious, the Dark Lord of the Sith, and the two exchanged wisdom and power. Sidious eventually abandoned Talzin, despite promising to make her his apprentice, and instead took Maul once he realized the boy's potential.[8] Once under Sidious' tutelage, Maul began training as his Sith apprentice.[1].

IMHO, there is no proof plaguius even existed. I red that scene as a tall tale told by Palpatine to manipulate anakin

Upon further research, the guy who wrote the Plaguius novel also wrote Tarkin which is canon and he reestablished a lot of the old EU lore..

So the above is true but here is more...

At some point Sidious had learned everything he needed from his master.[1] Moreover, he had acquired his own pupil in the Nightsister MotherTalzin's son, Darth Maul,[2] a young Dathomirian Zabrak whom Sidious had kidnapped from Talzin when he was only a child.[5] As the Rule of Two mandated that only two Sith—a master and an apprentice—could exist at any given time, one of them had to die.[6] Now that he had no further use for a teacher, Sidious disposed of Plagueis, killing him in his sleep.[1]

I just figured it was an inside joke relating to Sky Strike being the Imperial equivalent of Top Gun.
They mention the flight academy parallel in Rebels Recon.
 
Ok, there are a lot of theories flying around to account for bad writing, artists putting their mark on the franchise, and basically the whole style of the animation. So I have decided to throw my own wacky theory into the ring.

Darth Vader is Fulcrum. You can see in the prequels that he just wants to help out his mom and be a good kid. Then later the Emperor starts messing with his head. So what happened was that when Obi Wan chops off his legs after the lava surfing Anakin snaps and develops multiple personalities: One good and one bad. Occasionally the good personality takes over. That is how Luke was able to "save" Anakin: the good personality took over and tossed the Emperor down the shaft. So right now when the good personality takes over, it sends information to the rebels as Fulcrum. That is also how the Inquisitors are able to keep finding the rebels. The bad personality gets flashes of what the good personality has down and knows where to send them.

I like that! I don't believe they would ever go that route, but it would make for a pretty interesting direction
 
I love that Kallus has changed sides. Although I want to see a bit more of his struggle. That episode with Zeb was a good start, but we need more. Currently, It's a bit two dimensional.

I want to see his "Finn" moment

you and me both! i have so much more respect for this character now. i never cared for him much in the pervious seasons but once i saw him team up with Zeb, and him sitting all alone in his bunk room.. i knew something was up. i didnt think they would go this far into detail about him being upset with the empire.

him helping them escape was priceless and i even gasp when it happened. very cool episode

Look at the names:
Skerritt
Skerris

Skerritt is well known as his role as the pilot Viper (with a V) who is an instructor The US Navy's Top Gun Fighter Pilot School.
Skerris is a pilot with the first name Vult (with a V) who is an instructor at the Imperial Navy's (Top Gun like as stated in the Rebel Recon) Fighter Pilot School.

Skerritt's hair cult and mustache and lean facial features are similar to how he looked as Viper.
