Mass Effect Visor - finished with femshep costume pics!

Hey guys!
This is my second costume build and the first one I've gotten the courage to document and post. I made a foam Shepard costume for halloween last year and I wanted to add a visor to it before I take it out to the Fan Expo next week (I can't believe it's next week already, I need to stop doing this stuff last minute).

After looking at all the different visors, I decided to do my own interpretation that's sort of a combination of the Kuwashii and sentry visors.

I started with a foam mockup

I've never worked with styrene before, but I thought stacking layers of it would be a good way to tackle this build. This is mostly laser cut 2mm styrene and some thinner bits I cut by hand. I also laser cut the acrylic for the eye piece.. this blue edge glow stuff looks pretty sweet (just not in this photo)

Next up is to heat form the styrene and get the electronics in there. More progress coming soon. Really soon since I have less than a week left :(

Re: Mass Effect Visor

I know you have a deadline, but please don't forget to post when you're done! I would do a visor accessory exactly like this, too, so I am very curious to see how it comes out! Also, really good reference pics, thanks for posting them.

@Rubber Slug, @Sluis Thanks!

@Freya Will do! Getting photos is definitely part of the plan because after all the work I put into the costume for halloween, I don't have a single good photo to show for it. I've been following your costume thread since I found it while I was gathering reference and your attention to detail is inspiring!

I spent the day heat forming and sanding and sanding some more and finally priming. The harsh curve of the top bit looks nothing like the reference, but that was the only way to get the eye piece to sit parallel to my face and not hit me in the eye. I'd make some adjustments to the shape if I was doing it again...

Re: Mass Effect Visor

This looks great! For the acrylic, did you laser etch the details? What did you use to make them blue?

Re: Mass Effect Visor

@Iron Giant Yes, the details are laser etched. The acrylic is fluorescent blue so the etching and edges show up blue

The paint finish turned out rougher than I'd hoped, kind of speckled... still trying to get the hang of the airbrush. The bad news is the acrylic scrapes off the lacquer primer really easily, despite the shop telling me this was the right thing to use. The good news is I can use this to do some weathering and hopefully a clear coat will give it enough protection. As long as I don't headbutt any krogans.

Wow this is awesome!!!

Any plans to make more than one? I'd be interested in buying :)

Re: Mass Effect Visor

@River Thank you! Unfortunately not, I'd love to make more (of everything) but I don't have a dedicated workspace in my tiny apartment so I need to clean everything up so we can eat dinner at a table again, sigh. One day...

Nearly there! The LEDs are installed, just need to trim the wires down to size. here's a photo before I cover up the LEDs with a thin piece of styrene.

Re: Mass Effect Visor

it's all good,

but WOW that is just amazing. If you EVER do consider it, I know i'd be very interested, I just don't have time to make something so awesome!

Re: Mass Effect Visor

Finished!! I am in love with this acrylic, I just want to make everything out of acrylic and LEDs now.
Hopefully I'll be able to get some action shots of it in full costume over the weekend.

Re: Mass Effect Visor

That really does look SO COOL! I love how that kind of acrylic captures the light on all those linear details. I wasn't thinking of making my omniblade light up... but seeing how neatly you've done this makes me think about it.

I totally want a visor now. You made this look super easy.

Re: Mass Effect Visor - finished!

@SqueekinOrka, Freya - thanks!
You should definitely try a visor, it seemed to be the most popular part of my costume when I wore it yesterday. Funny, I also got some people asking how I lit up my omni-blade but it isn't lit up at all, that's just the fluorescent acrylic. I'm sure it would look cooler if it WAS lit up though, I'd love to see it if you end up doing that.

Here are a couple of shots from the Vancouver Fan Expo yesterday. My first time going to a con in costume... it was crazy fun/terrifying.

Your suit is very well proportioned for you. I'm looking at your upper leg armor in particular, I like how you made the layers narrow so it could be shorter (stop above the knee) without looking crunched. I made mine just a little too long. And the darker paint job makes me kinda wonder if I want to go that route when I put the final coats on mine...

EXCELLENT boots too!

Really great work, Freya is right, it is oerfectly proportioned to you and looks amaginze!
Glad you have a fun/horrifing time at your 1st con :p
