Hi guys, another new member asked me to post some pictures of this build.
This was my first build and was before I became a member of TheRPF (so go easy.... I was making it up as I went along)
I built this for a medieval banquet that me and some colleagues were going to. As a bunch of us were playing Skyrim at the time, I figured I would make my own helmet.
I started with careful planning and drawing up some meticulous blueprints.
I then bought a cheap glue gun, some of that 1cm thick foam floor stuff, drew up some paper templates and got to work.
(Sorry but I don't have any actual build pictures, these were taken the other day)
I started by making a 1 inch high headband from the foam, on which I glued 4 triangles with convex edges that came together to form the dome of the helmet. My measuremnts/planning was not great, so I ended up with a gap at the front where the triangles didn't quite meet (dealt with later) and the dome was a little too big.
WARNING: When you curve thick foam, its interior measurements shrink as the foam on the inside of the curve compresses. You have to allow for this or else you will face an issue I have with my helmet. Its too tight! (I can get my head into it, but it's not comfortable to wear)
Once I had the dome, I cut out a front and back piece. I made two cuts down from the inside corner of each eye hole so that I could set the 'nose guard' part forward from the rest of the front plate. I then glued it back together once the 'nose guard' was pushed forward. These and the inside of the dome can be seen in the following picture.
Once the main pieces were together I did the following:
A 1 inch wide (but thin piece of foam), strip running from the back, over the top and down the noseguard.
A lot of 4-5mm wide (but thin) strips of foam to run along all the edges and round the headband piece.
(these not only added detail, they also covered up all the messy joins on the main piece)
I then used a drimmel to add 'battle damage'
I then covered it with a sealer (i think made with modgePodge), sprayed on a black coat of paint, and dry-brushed on silver paint to give it a metalic look.
And here it is....
Despite it being too small and the dome being a bit big, I had a heap of fun building it, I learnt a lot, and it went down a storm at the Banquet. I even had the actors come over to try it on and compliment me on it.
Thanks for reading!
