Link and Dark Link (Twilight Princess Inspired)

What’s better than one costume? A matching set. I had been doing Link on my own for a few years when my friend wanted to do a LoZ costume with me. We decided Dark Link was the best fit for her, and set out to replicate my costume as closely as possible, just mirrored and with a Dark Link twist.

Here's the run down on materials used:

The tunics are made out of a micro suede material. The forearm bracers are a sturdy duck cloth fabric. The “Armored” pad on my right forearm, and Dark Link’s left respectively are craft foam, reinforced with resin and plasti-dip, with leather strapping.

Gloves started life as a pair of 8 dollar yellow cow hide gloves at Wal*mart that were dyed the appropriate colors. Belts were just Tandy Leather belt blanks that were dyed. One set of the pouches I used in the past were surplus leather military pouches, and the more screen accurate pouches used are made out of plain leather.

My wig actually started life as a $15 “Surfer Dude” wig. Earrings are a pair of old screw back costume jewelry earrings that I painted blue. Ears are foam latex pieces from Scream Team.

Shields started life as one of the Zelda shields easily found on eBay. However, they shields come painted in bright, vibrant colors, so I dulled all the paint, weathered the shield up with cuts, pits and gouges, and then gave the whole thing a black and brown wash and set parts of it on fire. We then did our best to replicate the exact damage, mirrored, on Dark Link’s shield. Both swords and scabbards were mad entirely by me. Both started off with cardboard bases that were resined, then bondo’d, then resined again, before be weathered, painted, and additionally weathered.

I additionally made the bottle used by Link in the games, as well as a compasses to carry around. I also made several of the dungeon maps from the games and gave them away to people at the con who asked for pictures with me and seemed to be big fans of the game.

Those shields are pretty darn awesome. Very nice job on the weathering.

My whole approach to the Link costume was almost sort of Lord of the Rings meets LoZ. I wanted to take a sort of realistic approach to the costume. I mean, there's now way Link can drag his butt all over Hyrule, fight through dungeons, caves, Temples, and castles through legions of monsters without getting a little dirty. In fact, I'll sometimes do a "Beat Up" Link:

Got a nice little scene in Beat Down Boogie's "Really Long Dragon Con 2013 Video" with Dark Link as Tinkerbell:

For a long time I have wanted to have my Hylian Shield hang on my back in Link when I was tired of carrying it around, or wanted to take pictures that required both my hands, like holding the map and compass or trapping a Golden Bug or Fairy in the Jar. I could never think of good way to do it though. Canonically Link only has the one belt, so adding a “sling” to the shield would either make it sit on top of the current Sword Belt or awkwardly go under it. I thought about straps and snap systems. All these things that just didn’t work. And then on my run one day, in that moment of “Runner’s Zen” when you get into the groove and your mind just goes clear, it hit me.

The simplest solutions are often the best. A piece of leather cording strung between the hand grip and the forearm strap that would simply rest against where the sword belt fit into the scabbard.

And that’s it. It sits and hangs great.
