Mjolnir baby rattle: Are there casting materials that are more or less baby safe?

My friend just had a son whose middle name (and name his father will call him) is Thor. Not from the movie, but because of his heritage. I am contemplating making a movie-mjolnir replica that is infant sized, and functions as a rattle.

Are there resins that are better/worse for this? Dyes that I should avoid?

I'll of course be reading up on the safety info regarding all such things on my own, I'm just curious what child-safe prop makers do!

That one is rough. I haven't run accross any food safe resin just mold rubber.

I did find a Peakura hammer. One should be able to down size and make it with plastuct sheets. Use white glue, reuse a plastic rode and wrap with a lether strap for the handle with some more white glue and put a little xmas bell or rice in the hammer end. Paint with food coloring and you should be close.

For a clear coat you may be able to find food grade shellac.

Just some quick ideas. Hopefully some better ones will be along soon.
