gladiator helmet help

hi all
i have just bought a gladiator helmet online, it has a coating of oil or lubricant on it, what is the best way to remove this, i'm new to this so dont want to damage it using the wrong cleaner, thanks in adavnce
 
My roommate got one of those that came similarly oiled. I think he just used tissues to wipe it all off.
