Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release)

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Here is why I think Ep7-8-9 will be good.

OT: Brilliant.

Then, we got the PT. If nothing else, no one- not even Disney or Abrams- wants the PT again.

The PT was a great lesson in what not to do.

I do, however, personally like the PT.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Everyone is acting like Lucas is out, but he is a consultant. So if they ask him if an idea would fit in SW and he says no, they may listen. JJ Abrams said as much that basically he has Lucas there to answer questions and give opinions.

The same was true with the Empire Strikes Back. Lucas executive produced that film better better writers and a better director made it a great movie.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

I can just imagine a meeting with Lucas and Abrams. They sit in a room and Lucas gives his input to Abrams about how he sees the series going, a few ides about the story, and his wisdom as a director, ect. The whole time Abrams taking notes, nodding at just the right time, and genuinely thanking Lucas for his insight. They shake, Lucas and Abrams exit, Lucas walks off with his daughter as they leave for dinner, and someone approaches Abrams and asks "How did it go?" Abrams looks at the guy, and just twirls his finger around the side of his head .............

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins begs to differ. ;)
I'm not sure I understand what you're implying here. Assuming you're meaning that the subtitle "The Adventure Begins" implies there will be further adventures (which, as most of us know, never happened unless you count the 1988 tv movie), the Star Wars franchise is different for two reasons. First, it was far more successful financially and culturally than Remo Williams was. Second, because Episodes IV, V and VI were already in place; if he had stopped after Episode I the fans would have pestered him for Episodes II and III until the day he died. As it is, I'm convinced the only reason Lucas decided to do the Prequel Trilogy was so fans would stop asking for them. "Oh, you want Episodes I, II, and III? Okay, here they are; now shut up and stop bothering me."

But hopefully this time round, he'll have less YES men/women, and more people who'll say NO to outlandish ideas.

You don't think JJ Abrams doesn't have his own set of YES men/women hanging around him at all times? His own writers and producers do nothing but praise him at every chance they get. I don't think Lucas is the one we have to worry about.

All I'm implying is that putting a "Part 1" in the title doesn't mean there must or will be a "Part 2" or beyond (or these days a "Part -1"). I also don't think Lucas did the prequels because fans asked him to. I think he did them because he wanted to. The bitterness came as a result of the reaction to what he'd created, since it was purely, completely, 100% him, rather than a collaborative effort like the OT.

Agreed. You internet hero naysayers are going to eat it, this film will be great. Will it be STAR WARS? Depends on you, but it will be a great ride, and I am no JJ fanboy.

I don't disagree here, actually. I think it'll end up being like Trek '09: entertaining, but missing some crucial element that the original had. Given how Trek '09 felt, though, I think the film will feel a lot closer to a Star Wars film than anything else, but make no mistake: the past is gone. We won't get it back. This is why trying to recreate the old days is a fool's errand.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

However episode VII is received by the fans, VIII and IX will still be made. IMO, Episode VII will have its biggest effect with the franchise on future one off films. If the new characters are accepted well, there will be a better chance of them having their own movies made.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Will lightsabers have lens flare?

I thought that myself. When he made the first Star Trek he said he was making it how he envisioned his star wars COULD look like if he ever had the chance. So I think they will have similarities in how they are filmed, but not too similar I hope.

Ah, okay. Under normal circumstances I'd agree completely. But since Lucas announced "a new Star Wars trilogy" prior to Episodes I-III I think there was an unusual expectation that there would in fact be three movies.

To a degree, I can understand his bitterness about how the movies were received. I mean, Star Wars had become the lion's share of his professional life, and nobody likes to hear negative comments about their work. But at that point he had assigned himself an impossible task--write and produce three movies that would live up to all of the expectations the fans had built up over the intervening years; I can't think of any writer/producer/director that could have accomplished that goal.

...I heard they're developing a "crystal-flare"...
Wasn't she a porn star in the late 70s?

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Here's an interview with Simon Pegg about JJ and Star Trek, which I'm taking as a good omen for Ep VII:
http://io9.com/simon-peggs-star-trek-reboot-theory-is-this-the-mirr-499064330
"J.J. [Abrams] is keen on having as much stuff around you physically as is possible, and using CG as little as possible," said John Cho, in a roundtable interview with Pegg and some other reporters yesterday. "It makes it easier for an actor, certainly, to look up and see things, instead of green felt cloth."

...

That commitment to avoiding greenscreen also includes building huge sets. Says Pegg, "The set we had now was the biggest ever rendering of the Starship Enterprise in the history of the Star Trek story. We had a bridge that was connected to a corridor that went through to the medbay, engineering and the transporter room, so you could do long walking and talking scenes, and get a sense of the ship's size."

They also built a big piece of the Klingon homeworld, Kronos, at Sony. And the red forest from the opening sequence is a gigantic set, which they built in West L.A.

Sets! What a novel idea!

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Well JJ did use a minature for a scene set in Iowa in the first film... instead of doing it with CGI. Which is awesome.. don't have to wait 6 months to see the results :p

I'm also pretty sure Enterprise will make an appearance in Ep VII seeing as how R2 made an appearance in ST09 ;)

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Didn't the Enterprise already make an appearance in Ep 2? And the Millennium Falcon turned up in the battle against the Borg in First Contact. No biggy.
I never knew about the R2 easter egg until now. Not something you'd ever notice unless you were freeze framing it, just like the other aforementioned cameos.
