For those who are interested in making SQ uniforms, this info may be helpful:

I just found my notebook with the rank system sheets we used to use for reference on the show. All of the info dates back to the first season- we followed the same rank system all the way through the series, but at times I'm sure mistakes were made (collar ranks not matching shoulder rank, etc.). The red patch thing sorta got pushed to the background as in s2/3 well. The only new rank that was invented was in season 3- Piccolo's Warrant Officer (stripe with star in the middle of it as I recall?)

Here is some info from these sheets (some of which you already know):

Jumpsuit colors:
black- deck crew and engineering
teal- science and medical
orange- moon pool and docking port

Shirt colors:
white- medical, science, deck crew
red- engineering
royal blue- moon pool, docking port (with orange jumpsuit)

Rank background colors:
lt. blue- deck crew
yellow- staff
red- engineering
white- science (was this used?)

Also:
Vice Admiral- two stars, no stripes, yellow bg
Admiral- 3 stars, no stripes, yellow bg
Commodore- single star, no stripes, yellow bg

On the gray background patches with the angled stripes; I have the original sheets with drawings of each rank, hand-written notes on colors and how many of each are to be made. Here is some of the info from those sheets:

Non- Nautical Badges:
Army- black on Olive Drab background
Marines- black on blue/gray background (there were two types of these- black stitching and silver/gray stitching)
1 stripe- Private
2 stripes- Corporal
3 stripes- Sergent
3 stripes and 2 bars- Sergent 1st Class
3 stripes, 3 bars, 1 dash- Sergent Major

In my collection of original patches, I have:
1 Army Private (black stitching)
1 Marine Private (black stitching)
1 Marine Private (silver/gray stitching)
1 Marine Corporal (silver/gray stitching)
1 Marine Sg't 1st Class (silver/gray stitching)
1 each 'blanks'- o.d. with black border, bluegray with black border, bluegray with silver/gray border. These are stapled to the notes for reference. They have the border and ueo logo, but no stripes.

Air Force- gray on Navy blue
I never saw any of these, but the notes I have indicate 20 were made in 3 different ranks during season 1: (4)Senior Airman, (4)Master Sg't, and (12)Airman. The designs are a bit different and hard to describe- I'll post scans soon.

If anyone else has rank questions, I can now answer them with the official info. I'll try to get scans or pics up soon.

I snapped some quick pics of my SQ loose patch collection as well as pics of the rank notes I mentioned above:

The two sets with the blue backgrounds (IMG_8545 and IMG_8546) are various ranks and other insignia from all seasons. The patches in IMG_8546 are ones I designed.

If anyone wants to know what any of these are, just ask.

Thanks for putting this out there, Mark. It is indeed great reference material.

P.S. I don't know why, but I've always liked the Deon patches.
