re: *** the RPF 2012 Halloween Costume Contest ***

I will be the administrator for this contest so if you have ANY questions/concerns please feel free to post them here or PM me.

Please make sure to read all the rules, the last thing we want is an entry to be missed because of some small miscommunication!

Good luck everyone, looking forward to this. :D:thumbsup

It is that time of year again! Time for the RPF's Halloween Costume Contest! 2012 marks our third annual Halloween Costume contest! Last year we gave away almost $600 in gift cards. This year we are giving away $1,500! We have more prizes, more winners and even a new category (because YOU requested it!)

One of the best aspects of the RPF is seeing all the incredible costumes (and props) built and worn by our members! From Avengers (Iron Man, Iron Man, Iron Man and more Iron Man) to the Amazing Spider-Man to The Dark Knight, this has been a year of inspiring movies and inspiring costumes!. Best of all, our members have some of the most awesome costumes on the net, and our Replica Costume Forum is the most popular forum on our site! This is your chance to strut your stuff, gain fame AND fortune!

Contest Rules and Submissions:

Please read the rules before submitting your costume as not following them may result in your disqualification from the contest!

  • You MUST be a registered member of therpf.com! Click this link to register.
  • NEW FOR 2012! You can only enter YOUR costume; not the costume of a boyfriend, wife, etc. Obviously, if you are a parent, you can enter your child’s costume on their behalf. If you are entering the group category, make sure you have permission from everyone in the group. Also, please note that only the winning person who posted the group photo will receive a prize, not each member in the group.
  • One entry per person (if you are a parent, you can enter your child as well as yourself)
  • NEW FOR 2012! You MUST have a build thread for your entry!
  • If you've previously won in any category you will not be permitted to re-enter the costume for which you won.
  • If you entered the contest previously and were NOT a winner, you can enter your costume again, but you cannot use the same photo as last year.
  • No store-bought costumes! If it came from Wal-Mart, this probably isn't the contest for you. (Staff reserves the right to deny entry or disqualify an entry based on source of costume.)

Note: We fully EXPECT contestants to promote themselves (facebook, twitter, etc) and to push for votes, but we expect them to do so in a positive manner. Negative campaigning is best left to politicians. If we find a contestant negatively campaigning against another contestant’s entry, whether on this site or not, the negative-Nancy MAY be eliminated from the contest.

Entry Submission

There are three steps to entering this contest;

  • First, you must create a build thread, here in the Replica Costume Forum with the title: "[Your board name]'s 2012 Halloween Costume Contest Entry"

In the first post of your thread, tell us about your costume, how you created it, any challenges you faced along the way and any details about the costume that you are particularly proud of having created. While it is not required, we'd also like you to include a little about your skill and experience as a costume builder and any tips you might like to share. This is also an opportunity for you to show off in progress images of your costume as well as additional images of your finished costume (as you can only post ONE photo in the gallery for your entry.)*

  • Second, you must post a proof photo into your build thread, "proving" this is your costume in order to dissuade those who might simply submit a random photo from off the internet. The "proof" photo needs to be you, in costume, with either a sheet of paper that says "The RPF Costume Contest 2012" or a photo of you in costume with your computer in the background with therpf.com up on the computer. This is a very important step, so make sure to include your "proof" photo when entering!.

  • Finally, post a SINGLE good, clear photo of your costume into the RPF Gallery under the Contests->2012-10-Halloween Contest folder. BACKGROUNDS ONLY can be modified with a program like Photoshop. Any alteration to the costume however will result in being disqualified from the contest.

    * - If you already have a build thread on the forum create a NEW thread that fulfills the requirements above. You may link to your other thread but be sure that all requirements are met in your contest posting.

The title of your entry should include your board name and the name of your costume.

We are excited to have FOUR categories this year (as opposed to three), with a first place winner for each category, a runner up for each category, and an honorable mention for each category.

The categories are:
  • Females in costume
  • Males in costume
  • Group in costume
  • Kids (12 and under) in costume

How are winners determined?

We will accept entries through Nov 2 at 10 PM PST (so you have time to submit your Halloween photos).

On Nov 5, we will open the gallery to voting and have the members vote on the winners through Nov 9 at 10PM PST. Winners will be announced on Nov 12, 2012.

What are the prizes?

  • Female in costume - first place - $250 Gift Card to Amazon.com
  • Female in costume – runner up - $125 Gift Card to Amazon.com

re: *** the RPF 2012 Halloween Costume Contest ***

So by the IP rules, the costume has to be completely 100% original? Quote, "(a) the author/creator of the Submission, (b) that you are the present and sole owner of all right, title and interest in and to the Submission, (c) that it is an original work, (d) that you have the full, exclusive and unconditional right and authorization to submit the Submission, and (f) that no third party has any rights in or to the Submission."

So with (A) that's pretty clear if you're the creator of the costume, but if it's a kit from another person that you've assembled and finished, then who really created it? , (B) So if Marvel holds the rights to Iron Man for example, does that mean costumes like Iron Man cannot enter? (C) Pretty clear there. I mean I could go on about the fine print, and I'm not trying to start a argument, but the fine print is kinda picky and I would just like to get further clarification on the IP rules.

re: *** the RPF 2012 Halloween Costume Contest ***

Excellent points. The fine print is picky to help the site avoid legal issues, not to limit what costumes can be presented. I'm asking the mods for clarification on the legal but here's my immediate take on the intent of A & B:

(A) If you purchased a kit and finished it you can enter, however if you purchased a finished costume you cannot.

(B) You can enter costumes such as Iron Man, Batman, etc. Just not someone else's finished work without their permission.

That is subject to change however. I'm administering the contest but am not totally versed on the legal so once I have confirmation from the mods I'll make sure to clear it up totally.

No worries at all about arguments, best to get any uncertainty out of the way early. :thumbsup

So if I bought a shirt from a costume tailor, a watch from ebay, etc., as in I did not physically make it myself I can still enter, right?

Not that it matters, that shirt won't be arriving for at least 10 more weeks.

Well keep in mind that you have to post a build thread which implies you need to make something. :lol

Finding unique or screen accurate bits and pieces for your costume is an art in itself so assembly from multiple sources would be alright as long as there's more to your costume than "bought this and this and put it on". Think more along the lines of "I bought this and had to weather it, then I bought this and had to alter it, then I made this out of another item" etc.

re: *** the RPF 2012 Halloween Costume Contest ***

Too bad that my ANH Helmet is not an whole costume :eek.

Perhaps next year, when i may start over to build some armor to :rolleyes

Greetings Toxx

re: *** the RPF 2012 Halloween Costume Contest ***

Can it be a costume that was built a few years ago? Or does it have to be a 2012 build?

~ BC

p.s. can we get an AMEN broth... er... I mean a sticky ;)

re: *** the RPF 2012 Halloween Costume Contest ***

Let's say I've just recently created a build thread for a costume I just finished, and it already contains all of the required info and pictures. Can I create a new thread titled "aeonpulse's 2012 Halloween Costume Contest Entry" and within that just post a link to my already existing build thread?

re: *** the RPF 2012 Halloween Costume Contest ***

Based on those I'd guess you'd still have to post up a "proof" pic in the new thread. And just link to your build thread from there.

Gahhh, I totally missed that bit about existing threads while reading through everything. Thanks for pointing that out to me! :thumbsup

It can be an old build provided it did not win any previous costume contests on the RPF. :)

Sticky in progress, I don't have that power so I've reported it to the mods. Hopefully soon! :)

Koda is correct! :)

Don't forget too though that you need a short summary in your new thread as well though:

In the first post of your thread, tell us about your costume, how you created it, any challenges you faced along the way and any details about the costume that you are particularly proud of having created. While it is not required, we'd also like you to include a little about your skill and experience as a costume builder and any tips you might like to share. This is also an opportunity for you to show off in progress images of your costume as well as additional images of your finished costume (as you can only post ONE photo in the gallery for your entry.)*

Then link to your build thread and you're good to go. :thumbsup

re: *** the RPF 2012 Halloween Costume Contest ***

Nice! If I actually finish mine in time, well heck...I'll enter too!
