Hi Gang,

I was wondering if anybody can direct me to somebody/shop who can CNC MDF and other types of materiel? I have seen several projects that utilized a CNC cutter and I would love to take advantage of this specialized trade.

Unfortunately, there is nothing in my immediate area.

Thanks

Hard to believe there's no CNC machining in Huntsville. A quick google shows:

OH SURE... make me look bad... lol :)

Huntsville is the Space and Rocket capital of the country. I've called most of these shops and they're more industrial / large contractors. They dont cater to the individual.

For example: I called Humboldt Machine Shop - they wanted 500 dollars for 8 throttle pistons...

That's kind of the rub about cnc work. It can be expensive! If there's any part of the process you can do, such as the cad work. It can lower your price substantially. Machine shop time usually starts at $60 an hour & they figure in the cad, programming, set-up & run time. The parts that takes the longest are usually cad, programming & set-up. Sometimes they will quote you a high price if it's something they don't want to work with i.e MDF. Some shops just won't want to deal with the material. Also if it's just an over the phone quote, they will always quote high until they see the full project scope. Ask the shops if you can send in a cad file & have an assessment done. In the end, you might be better off asking some folks around here. I know there are builders here who either have small cnc setups or have access to full shops. They might be able to work with you a little better on price. Tips from an ex-job shop machinist!

How big of a piece are you looking to CNC, how fast do you need it and how many?

I have a home CNC but my time is limited. PM me what you are looking for.
