My C-3PO build!

The protocol droid has been in the works for a little over a year now. It's getting very close to completion so I figured I'd start sharing some photos and posting some of the aspects of the build.

I cover many aspects of the build on my blog (link in the signature below) but this is probably a better place for question and answer.

After ordering the essential parts at the end of July,2011, the first items I received where the Starbuckcylon fiberglass head and vacuformed foot shells.

It was time to get to work!

Some of my 3d modeled parts arrived today.

Center detail for the belly.
I've modeled this one with openings along the inner sides so a speaker can be mounted behind it with less sound obstruction but keep an accurate look when viewed from most angles.

Large forearm greeblie, modeled to the proper size. The kit version is too long and lacking detail.

Kit part is grey, upgraded part in white.

Last week I received a few more upgrades, including the throat valve.

Thanks guys! I've been using Alclad II chrome paint to get the silver. Multiple steps must be done prior to spraying the Alclad or it'll turn out looking like crappy silver spray paint.

The method I'm using is very loosely based on the chrome technique from the Stan Winston School "metal painting techniques" video

The chrome method in that video is amazing but wasn't quite right for the silver look on the protocol droids. It was more of a steel/nickel chrome look and not polished aluminum that would match the vac-metalized look of the movie suits.

I ended up changing a major step of the process based on an accidental discovery I made while screwing around with the paint. The new color is spot-on what I wanted. With each part I spray, the finish is getting better and more reflective. Working out the kinks... I'll post more photos soon.

Once I'm done spraying the parts (and have mastered a few aspects of the of the process) I'll make a tutorial on the silver (and gold). Using my method.

To get the basics go watch the Stan Winston video. It's full of great techniques. Best $20 you can spend if you're looking for metal finishes.
