Foam Iron Man - Imperfect Start - Con Page 5 / Sound Page 6!

Hi guys! I, like a ton of people recently, got the itch to build an Iron Man suit. I decided after my horrible smelly experience with fiberglassing my Batmobile, that a foam Iron Man suit is the way to go. I've researched all I can, watched the YouTube vids from Stealth and the other great ones, and started yesterday.

I downloaded all the letter-sized Pep files and printed them secretly while at work. Of course our printer being nappy, each page got scaled to a different size. I didn't notice this until I had cut everything out and started piecing them together. 11 hour story short, I'm having to free-hand my Iron Man suit. I started with the helmet and it's not perfect. But I think it has character. So, do you guys think it's good enough to continue with the rest? Be honest now please. I'm not even sure if it fits yet.

Re: Foam Iron Man - An Imperfect Start

looks kind of like a "real steel" "iron man".

You ask if its good? well that depends. if your wanting a replica iron man suit, then i personally would start again (im kind of a perfectionist anyway so even if my faceplate is slightly off then il start again, which it did and i am just building mmy new helmet for one of my tutorial videos now)

but if your just after a rough iron man with a personal touch then it looks pretty good, especially for freehand!

Re: Foam Iron Man - An Imperfect Start

I think it's slowing growing on me. Maybe. I made a few cuts on the back and was just now able to put it on for the first time. It needs the back area expanded for a more comfortable fit as my nose is pressed right against the front and its waaaaayyy too tight. But here is how it looks, which gives a better idea than it sitting on the counter.

I like this. You could almost keep the style through the whole costume, and go for an 'animated' look.

Re: Foam Iron Man - An Imperfect Start

I like it, sure lets be honest it does not look movie accurate, ok I don't think you needed us to tell you that. But honestly it does have a lot of character. If I were you I would paint it up red and instead of gold I would use a gold brass type mix but before painting it I would add rivets and make it a steampunk Ironman. I think it really has the look for a steampunk version. Nice job.

Re: Foam Iron Man - An Imperfect Start

how come you didn't cut the corners off the edges? That's why it's so boxy. Good first try though.

keep at it. You'll pick up more things, the more you do it. It will make sense soon enough.

I'd suggest starting again, make sure your printer does not scale.

Also, if you don't have one, invest in a heat gun so you can get smooth curves

Re: Foam Iron Man - An Imperfect Start

Thanks guys! But honestly telling me "make sure your printer works right" isn't much help, since I don't know the dimensions to start with. That being said, I'm going to go forward and paint it up to see what it looks like and continue with the build! I can always go back and remake something right? What would be a HUGE favor though, would be if someone could print-out the foam Pep helmet file that contains less pieces and physically mail it to me? I've tried 3 printers now all with bad luck, so I'm hoping the helmet is the hardest piece given its size and needed curves.

Re: Foam Iron Man - An Imperfect Start

Thats the thing with pepakura, you size it, re-size it, then get the wrong settings on your printer. Then think you've fixed it but its still small. then take away borders on your print style and BOOM! Huge helmet. Alot of trial and error.
Alot.

Re: Foam Iron Man - An Imperfect Start

I would probably suggest first getting the files to print properly first. You could end up wasting a lot of foam and time freehanding it. Plus, it may not be what you dreamed it would be. I'm pretty new to costume making myself but I have always told myself that I want it to look as close as possible to real thing cause I don't want to be the guy at the convention that people see and say to themselves, "Nice try buddy, don't quit your day job." For mine, I didn't have pepekura designer, because I have a mac, so I found some foam files that someone saved in pdf format. I think the default size was for about a 6ft person and I am only 5'6". However I noticed that for my printer settings, if I selected "size to fit" in the print settings as opposed to "actual size"; it slightly scaled them down.
Here is a link to the pdf's IronMan_Foam.7z - 4shared.com - online file sharing and storage - download

Re: Foam Iron Man - An Imperfect Start

Don't mean this to be critical, because I don't think I could do a PEP armor, but it looks like a Frankenstein/Iron Man. Put some big bolts on the side and do the rest of the suit in bits and pieces from other super heroes. It would definitely be unique.

Re: Foam Iron Man - An Imperfect Start

Soooooo...... I painted it up to see how she looks anyways. Minus the eyes, the "cheek" details and very back of the head. What do you all think now?

Re: Foam Iron Man - An Imperfect Start

To be honest, it looks a helluva lot like the helmet Iron Man has in "Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes". That was my first thought any way. If you go in that route it should look amazing!

Ya? Post a pic if that please. Maybe I'll try to make a realistic version of a cartoon design!
