Sofa, can you elaborate on how you're figuring out all these little pieces? Are you working from a 3D model someone has done? Are you getting info from that guy who bought one of the Martin Baker chairs?

Who cares about the names of all of those parts affixed onto the Nav Chair:behave:rolleyes The fact that you're building them is good/cool enough for me Sofa:cool I'm sure they'll look super once finished!

Watching you piece these these nav chairs together is like trying to follow along with the world's most complicated Ikea build!

LOL! At least the Ikea build comes with a manual! ;)

The hardest part of these types of projects is seeing and designing a final product that not only doesn't exist in a photo but trying to make it look like a real world object. I usually start with a sketch (as seen above). Once I get a good idea of the part I then design ALL the shapes using a method called "Flat Packing" which is essentially building up layers to create a single multi-level/surfaced object.

To be honest... I really have no idea what I'm doing! ;)

Hey Lt W,

I'm basing everything I do on 3 different but VERY similar designs; the Maruska / Starkiller 3D model, the full scale prop created for the Harrod's version of the TFA cockpit and of course Stormy's real life chair. All three share the same iconic look, but all have a slightly different take on the greeblies and seat pads - which is solely based on the lack of any detailed images of the a complete Martin Baker ejection seat. I've based the initial design (frame, main seat and back panels on the Maruska / Starkiller version). And the greeblies are now based on Stormy's real chair - which are almost identical to the Maruska / Starkiller model - those guys did their homework!!

As for the design behind the headrest, there appears to be some sort of frame work in the shadows of the images Stormy posted so I did my best to interrupt how it would look. I didn't have to design anything behind the headrest but I wanted to add the details since one of the chairs will be freestanding next to the Nav Computer. Plus I'm just having fun with it!

Also, I KNOW there are people out there who, like me, will want to get up close to the nav chair, study each part of it and look into all the nook and crannies for details and greeblies. So, the more detail I add, the more authentic it appears. :)

Hope that made sense?

Hey J,

Thanks for the vote of confidence! As much fun as I'm having "doubt" likes to creep up on me and try to shake me up. I wont let it get the best of me!

And you're right, what's in a name? "Doohickey", "Thinga-ma-bob" and "Whats-it-called" have all worked for us. Why change now?! ;)

Hi Gang,

Early Morning Update!

Didn't get as much done as I would have liked this weekend. Too many hurdles and other life's little distractions got in the way...

Added filler to he arm rest supprts - that going to be a LOT of sanding

Work continues on the 3 nav chair headrests - lots of mods to this file over the weekend (very frustrating)

And mishaps...

Hey Sofa,

These Nav seats are beginning to look way beyond cool, can't wait to see them completed.:D

I've got to ask
I added super blue to these edges

'Super Blue' where can we procure some of this amazing stuff!

Roughneckone:cool

LOL!!! HA HA HA HA UGH... Dang stupid fingers!

Thanks so much! I can finally begin to see everything come together! However, I could tell you where to find super blue but it's a super secret! ;)

The little angel bracket struck me as a very good idea, it certainly will help protecting the otherwise rather fragile MDF construction. Are the other metal pieces similarly designed to cover bits and bobs sticking out?

As always the weekend updates are a Monday high point!

Hey FF,

Thanks! Based on all the images I've seen, the angle bracket made the most sense and it was something I didn't have to cut from other material and try to fit to shape. Most the other metal pieces will have MDF backers to give more bulk and weight to the actual piece. I'm looking forward to when they all get attached!

We're SO CLOSE to seeing the nav chairs finally come together! :)

Hi Gang,

Just a quick morning update! I didn't have much time to play yesterday afternoon but I did get to work on a few things...

More headrest greeblies
20170328_172059_zpsdhr46wwl.jpg

Primer
20170328_183205_zps9dmkg2pr.jpg

Armrest supports sanded and first round of primer
20170328_184826_zpszg3yekdb.jpg

These are going to require a LOT of attention
20170328_184834_zps7rakt3rm.jpg

I laser cut a new / smaller nav chair greeblie - I have NO IDEA what to even call these things! ;)
20170328_185820_zpsg47ne0ah.jpg

Sanded and added first round of primer on the new seat padding trim/panel
20170328_174809_zpsxm0rjugv.jpg

20170328_174813_zpshrw0981a.jpg

Second round of filler
20170328_184849_zpsymanyiyy.jpg

These will be painted black, sealed with a satin clear coat then painted silver. I'm hoping I can scrape some of the silver off to give it a "chipped" and worn look!

Cool progress. Once the seats are done, then only the canopy frame left?

How heavy are these seats going to be? looks like a lot of solid wood :)

Hey OC,

We're getting close! Once the seats are done I'm either going to tackle the canopy or the new complete corridor ring replacing the half wall!

So far the seats aren't as heavy as I thought they would be but I still have several things to add to include the metal greeblies. But I don't think they will be that heavy when finished. :)

Hi Gang,

Just a quick update! I'm working with fellow RPFer falctk421 on his upcoming Han Solo Fan Film called "The Indemnity Pursuit". We've been in discussion and are setting up time and dates for him and his crew to come out and use the cockpit! I'll let you know more as it happens. For those interested in the teaser... Enjoy! :)
