1:1 Millennium Falcon Cockpit Replica - Group Build

Interesting, original seems to have been part of a cassette player, possibly a U-Matic. That curved swoop would seem to coincide with the arms of the mechanism that pulls out the tape and wraps it around the head.

Hi T,

I had the same thought - not on any particular model but def something from a cassette or reel-to-reel player. That entire areas seems to showcase several media related greeblies - Garrard Trim Piece, tape reader head, mechanicals, etc... I'll def look into the U-Matic! Thanks for the info! Fingers crossed!

Wow, just finished going through this thread! What an awsome project!

Just wanted to share a fun thing related to the word greebly.
An aproximate translation of the word 'greebly' into swedish would be 'mojäng' which is what the guys who created Minecraft used to call their company. Mojäng is now owned by Microsoft.

Keep the updates coming! Great work!

Hi J,

Thanks for the kind words! It's def been a heck of a ride!

Interesting bit of info on the word "Greeblie". :)

Many more updates coming!

Very well done Sofa! Eager to see that cockpit put together to say the least:)

Hey J,

Thank you, my friend! I'm really itching to get these little greeblies knocked out so I can move forward to other portions of the cockpit to include a small portion of the cockpit corridor. :)

It's always tempting to stretch the pinstriping when you're applying it, but don't, because it will shrink back to its original length over time. In fact, it will probably shrink anyway. That's why one should always overlap the edges and live with the little bump that creates at the corners. Sometimes a clear coat can help keep it in place.

Hey T,

I quickly discovered the "stretching" problem VERY early on when I first started using the pin stripes. I then discovered the overlapping idea during my 3rd time pin striping the same panels (UGH). But I've always used the clear coat hoping to keep the PS in place. I think the right move is to paint the PS with a shot of clear over the panel as before. I'm ordering the necessary stencils so fingers crossed on its success!

Hi Gang,

Not much of an update... I've been dealing with a few things along with trying to knock out a bunch more greeblies!

BUT... I did manage to adhere the 1" tiles. The two open holes on the right will have 1/4" acrylic tile

Hi Gang,

Lots of forward progress! Once again Jessie was a HUGE help to me by cutting lots of greeblies! THANKS J

I really enjoyed weathering one of the greeblies from a few posts back do I decided to jump in and give a few of the pure silver painted greeblies some weathering - nothing major, just enough to say "Hey, I lived in a used universe..."

Another new greeblie - the 1/4" orange trim piece adds a bit more depth

A few areas to sand down and then a few more layers of paint and she'll be ready for her new home

I then shifted gears to get these panels back together - still work to do on them
20150628_111319_zps2ciian49.jpg

I then put the nose panels back on - this was NOT easy. There is so much shifting and warping - look how small the door used to be!

The seat is STILL a bit too high. We're going to have to fab a new seat post

The edges of the seat should bump the shelf

Sadly... the angles are off - AGAIN! UGH I have to figure this one out! It's never easy is it? ;)

Great update! The cockpit is a true behemoth.

Thanks much! It's amazing how much time all these little greeblies have been taking up - from design, to cutting, to building, sanding filling painting etc... I just hope it's all worth it in the end.

I cant get over how big she's gotten. It's funny how the area at the door is the ONLY part of the original platform that remanins uncovered. :) Good news, I'll be rebuilding the basic platform. It'll be lighter and much lower than the two black platforms that are there now.

I'm wondering if you'd be better off counter-sinking the mounting point of the existing seat post into the floor rather than fabbing a new one.

Hey BBD,

That's actually a great idea! It would make the seats very sturdy. BUT the seats posts we're using are welded at the top and bottom so we wouldn't be able to simply cut a small hole - the entire seat included mounting plates would have to fit through the hole. Or we cut two different pieces of wood and join them at the hole. Either way... ?

The original seats had a fairly large 6-8" post that was more than likely a cut steel pipe or somthing similar. I kind of like the idea of something bulky.

I would sure like to identify and find the original seats used. We need to find something soon.

Hi IT,

Its funny you mention the chair. Over the last few days I have been in direct talks with a few of the guys building the MF office chair. Unfortunately, they only built a single unit and it doesn't appear they will be making any more. :(

But all is not lost... Wavey has pointed me in a new direction. I hope to find something soon! :)

Great update Sofa and the comparo between the old and new cockpit is, indeed...big:cool And yes, it's all worth it in the end, specially with big project like yours. Someday I wonder if 2001 Space Station will be finished (with all of those repeated patterns and such); but when I look at it, I know that I'll make it to the end;) Keep on truckin'!

Thank you, my friend! I can't get over how different she looks. But these greeblies are killing me! Every time I think I'm finished... they pull me back in! ;) I was closely analyzing the canopy beams and they too are LOADED with greeblies! UGH...

I think you're closer at finishing the 2001SS than I'll ever be. She's a thing of beauty! Since the patterns appear to be repeating, have you considered making molds to help speed up the process? Also, where are you going to store her when she's all finished? She def deserves to be showcased / displayed. It would be a shame to keep her locked up. :)

This is looking great, the details that you have added (the higher platform and taller door) really add's to it. Just a quick question (not sure if this has been asked before) but when you first started this, did you use the 77 star wars blueprints as a guide for the overall dimensions or did you have to do it all from screencaps?

Thanks

Oslm

Hi O,

Thanks so much! I actually started the build based on Steve Starkillers full scale 3D model of the MF. Starkiller based his build off of screen grabs and (if I'm not mistaken, the MF Haynes Manual). What originally started off as JUST the center console from ANH quickly turned into what you see now - a screen accurate (as close as we can get) version of the ESB cockpit and MORE. Here is a link the Starkillers original thread.

http://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=102451

Ultimately the plan is build the entire MF. Not sure if we'll ever see that realized but we're keeping our fingers crossed and having lots of fun - that's the main thing.

Thanks again
