In Star Trek Voyager, the Vulcan game of Kal-toh appears in a great number of episodes. It is of course owned by Tuvok, and he takes great pleasure in 'torturing' ensign Kim with it :lol

According to Tuvok, Kal-toh "Is not about striving for balance but about finding the seeds of order even in the midst of profound chaos."

The object of the game is for each player in turn to position the rods, one at a time, till they become a perfect sphere.

When Ensign Kim called the game "Vulcan chess", Tuvok said "Kal-toh is to chess as chess is to tic-tac-toe."

(That was for the non-Trekies BTW :lol)

This is the game.

On with the build ....... with a few twists of my own as usual :lol. So long as it screamed "Kal-toh !" when done, I'd be happy :)

Drew a hexagon on a board of wood.

ktb2-920x622.jpg

Cut out the sides

ktb3-910x615.jpg

All cut.

ktb4-905x611.jpg

Stuck the sides onto the base, and cut out another smaller hexagon for the top 'tray'

ktb5-899x607.jpg

All stuck together.

ktb6-894x615.jpg

A packet of air-drying clay, shaping tools, water, sponge and a rolling-pin.

ktb7-888x600.jpg

Now the Mrs. is going to kill me if she sees this pic :lol

ktb8-884x597.jpg

Covered the top and sides with clay 'sheets'.

ktb9-880x594.jpg

Added and blended in little pieces of clay for the uneven mounds look.

ktb10-877x592.jpg

All covered.

ktb11-871x588.jpg

Made grooves for the 'tier' definition.

ktb12-865x584.jpg

Grooves evened out and smooth. Shaped and stuck individual bits of clay to the sides.

ktb14-860x580.jpg

ktb13-855x523.jpg

And here it is ready and painted :)

That's it. Hope you enjoyed :)

. Nah :lol

What's a good game of Kal-toh without the playing rods ? :lol

So enter lots of cut up pieces of wood.

ktb15-868x586.jpg

Sanded, primed and painted.

Voila - an unfinished game of Kal-toh.

Thank you for the kind words Mark & Mike, truly appreciated :)

It was fun to build :thumbsup

Just caught this in your other thread, beautifully done. :thumbsup

I hear the Vulcan ambassador is looking for your contact info!

I recently finished watching the series. I thought several times while watching how cool it'd be to have and make a replica. You definitely did it justice, great job!

That is a great looking piece from my all time favorite show! Fantastic job!

Ps. I also like the I Dream of Jeannie bottle and statue. ;)

Thanks folks :)

what paint colours did you use and what type of paint? cheers :)

Acrylic based eggshell.

Not bought colours though.

IIRC, I got a close-enough can of pink, split it in two parts, & then added black & white to lighten & darken that colour till the two I applied looked right.

Excellent, that was the route I was going to take, probably easier than tying to match shop bought colours, thanks muchly (y)D
