Warhammer 40k Bolter & Bolt Pistol (pic heavy)

Hi, I am pretty new here but thought I would post my progress shots of making a Warhammer 40k Bolter. I am using the Space Marine game pep files from Shiney over at Obscurus Crusade and translating them for use with pink insulation foam. My plans are to eventually cast this and make plastic or fiberglass pulls from it. I am using a mix of the Warhammer miniatures as well as the look and textures from the game as references. A lot of work still to go.

Whilst I'm not a fan of foam builds I like this build's progress thus far and am looking forward to seeing more

So here are is a shot of the pieces so far just laid out together.

I realized that in order to get the approximate thicknesses on the ribs and even the 2 body halves as well as the upper reciever portion I was going to have to plane down my foam. So I made a hot wire wand and am using remnant wood framing pieces as a ghetto foam planer.

So the results where pretty good. Here is the upper receiver portion with the ejection ports added in.

Working on the handle. Have just been using files on it for now. Will hopefully shape up a little more with sealing and bondo.

Love seeing someone else use the Foam and Bondo construction method :) Also, all your parts look great so far! Can't wait to see it finished. Out of curiosity, what do you use to seal the foam before you bondo over it?

Good luck!

Re: Warhammer 40k Bolter (pic heavy)

Im planing on using either PVA glue or acrylic gesso. Had a few questions though if anyone has used either of these to seal foam against bondo, how well it has worked? Last night I was browsing the smooth-on site and saw Shell Shock and sent them an email asking if it will work over Formular foam and they said it would. So that might be an option as well.

Re: Warhammer 40k Bolter (pic heavy)

Thanks guys. I pepped the barrel portion just to get a feel for what I will be working towards. I am going to cast the barrel and other round parts along with the handle separately, but am looking for some advice on creating the master first. I am leaning towards inner and outer diameter pvc with milliput for the bevel on the inside? What's anyone's thoughts? As for casting it, I was thinking cast the walls solid? Then drill out the muzzle brakes after casting?

Re: Warhammer 40k Bolter (pic heavy)

Started attaching parts now. I guess I for got to take some pictures after cutting out the parts in-between the sites and the top plate before I glued them.
Made some modifications on the body pieces. Cut the handle section off both in order to shape them as well as made the bevels on the back end of the gun body.

Re: Warhammer 40k Bolter (pic heavy)

Oh, also started work on a Bolt pistol, should I just post pics in this thread or start a new one?

Re: Warhammer 40k Bolter (pic heavy)

I can't wait to see how this turns out. Hoping I can get a set of foam pieces from you in the future as well. As for the muzzle breaks on the barrel I would recommend glueing a piece of paper on the inside on the back of the holes. So when you make your mold and do a casting, you should just be able to pop out a thin circle of plastic when it comes out of the mold very little cleanup to do around the edges. But that's only if you cast the barrels solid which I'm sure you'll be doing.
As for the Bolt Pistol I think it would be fine to have them both in this thread, just change the title up a little bit.

Got some more of the bolt pistol done. Im thinking since the bolt pistol came together so quickly it might be the guinea pig for sealing and bondo. Incase somthing goes horribly wrong it doesnt have as many detail pieces, so it wont be as hard to cut a new one.
