The Abyss Submersibles Project

Hi Caboosey,
There is no blu ray version of the movie as yet, that link is just the dvd, but word around the camp fire is its in the works for this year, (this is about the fifth year I've heard this though:rolleyes) That is a super pic of flatbed and your videos sound terrific....

I saw The DeepSea Challenge 3D last month in theaters, there is 4K (3D processed) footage from The Abyss in the movie when they talk about Cameron's past. It looked amazing and very sharp with amazing color. I work in Post-Production with 4K so I can say without a doubt they have a new transfer of the film done so the Blu ray must be coming out soon. If they re-release in 3D in theaters it would be awesome. I'm not a big 3D fan, but the few quick scenes they showed looked awesome.

A few more pics I found today....:)

Just finished scanning almost 100 photos of behind the scenes of The Abyss. There will be more added later once I get access to scanner that can scan negatives There are many negatives that I don't have any developed photos of.

The scanned photos are in high resolution. Scanned at 1200dpi with lowest compression.

Here is what I got so far.:

I have been working a bit on the hull geometry but nothing ready to go yet. I'm debating what scale to do.
1/24th as you mentioned before sounds good! A 1/8th scale would be something special too but costly I guess. Do you know if the fullsize versions were designed and built specifically for the film?

The full sized submersibles, both Cab and Flatbed, were built around existing, functional submersibles from Can Dive in Canada. Don Pennington built the movie submersibles in an airplane hanger at the Van Nuys airport in California. After filming concluded the cosmetic shells and details were stripped off the submersibles and they were returned to Canada.

What I'm aiming to do is create a 1/24 scale kit of Cab, about 8 inches long, and if those do well then consider a Studio Scale (1/8) kit, about 24" long. Obviously a studio scale kit would be a huge investment in mold rubber alone!
