Jurassic Park Horizon (etc) T-REX builds - let's see 'em!

My next model build will be a Horizon 1:20 T-Rex kit. I understand this kit was scanned from the original Stan Winston maquette, so I'd like to get the paint job as close to JP1 as possible.

I'd love to see pics of other build-ups and paints, I'm sure there must be a few out there in members collections.

Equally I'd love to see any other T-Rex kits and builds, I'm not sure what else is out there aside from the Horizon?

Nice to see another Dino enthusiast. :thumbsup
Here's my baby. I like him better with mouth closed. :lol
(I used a stand from another dino model.)

One day I'm going to redo his arms. :sick

No Dino fans?

Here's one I did about 17 years ago. Only photo I could find. He actually looks better than the over exposed flash photo that I have. He currently resides in pieces in a box waiting to be resurrected one day. It is hard to see, but on the stand I made footprints and filled them with clear to mimic the puddles in the movie.
I had the Velociraptor (spelling?) too. Sold him years ago to someone in Canada needing to do a 3-D scan to make a life-size replica. He sent photos when it was done, it looked just like the model.... now where are those photos...

Also have the Brachiosaurus (sp?) it remains unfinished packed away. My sons are getting older, may be a great project to work on these with them one day.

This is my Horizon, 'Jurassic Park' T-Rex, built in 1993, right after the first movie premiered. He has been altered to a hunting pose with his lower legs filled with Plaster for stability, along with a length square brass tube - which accepts another slightly smaller brass tube built into the base, holding the T-Rex securely in place. Lastly, I installed a pair of pale yellow, 5mm glass eyes. Anyway, I dusted and cleaned him off for a set of new photos. Next stop ... outdoors for more brightly lit, and scenic background photos!

And what happened when I brought this big thing outside for a nice photo shoot? Thunder! Just like in the movie! LOL!!! Still nice outdoor shots, though!

Are there any online tutorial for painting dinosaur models? I can't seem to find any tutorials on how to paint the skin.

My best suggestion is to learn how to use an airbrush - it you don't already know how. Most of the best painting is done using an airbrush. You can also go with oil paints, applied with various artist's brushes. After assembly, wash the model with warm water and Dawn detergent to remove any mold separator, and oils from your own hands ... wear vinyl gloves while washing the model. Paper towel it dry, then let it fully air dry a couple of days. The first thing is to lightly coat the model with a can of gray spray primer. allow this to thoroughly dry, then proceed to paint your model. Generally paint light colors first, adding darker shades and markings next. After painting you can seal it with a matte acrylic spray. Following this, you can 'weather' the animal with a wash of dark brown or black Acrylic paint to bring out some of the scale detail. It did this on the belly of the beast. A final coating of matte spray finishes the project.

As for how to paint them, anyone's guess is a good one! There is no real knowledge on what they looked like color-wise, but assumptions can be made from modern animals. Predator vs Herbivores in the way of coloration, and possible body color camouflage. Browns, grays, and various shades of muted greens would be good choices for general body colors. Brighter reds, oranges, and even blues can be used for certain parts of male Dinosaurs ... such as head the cranial crest of the Parasaurolophus, the head shield of Triceratops, among others. These are reasons why a tutorial would be of little help.

Best of luck to you in your modeling!;)

Sorry to drop into everyone's thread here. First time post here. I'm a huge Jurassic Park buff. Books, memorabilia, film canon. All of it. I'm searching everywhere for the trex and raptor horizon kit!! I know they've been on ebay frequently but they haven't been on for a while! Does anyone know anyone who can help me locate these kits?? I'm so discouraged. Beginning to worry I may never see another one on eBay. Sorry again for the random post in here. I wish I had a picture to contribute.

I recently found a knock off on ebay but looks about the same As the original, from what i have seen. Its from thailand so it should be here in a few weeks. There is another auction up with you want to bud and give it a try. Total was 28.00

Im sure it is, honestly i also bought the Reborn T Rex for 90 and i also based of the stan winston model and it is extremely detailed. All upu have to do is use a dremel for the spines and repaint it.

I saw that one!! Do you think it's the same size though?

I just ordered one from a seller in Thailand http://www.ebay.com/itm/Movie-Juras...588?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item25a89eba2c . It should be here in a week or so. I'll let you know what I think of the kit when it gets here.

As seen here, it appears to be the same model ... it is, in fact, a recast. It says it is 11-inches tall. The original Horizon kit was 1/16th scale, and this looks to be the same. Again, when I get it, I'll report this info here.;)

Very cool!! I'm interested to see how it turns out.

I'm honestly willing to drop 350 to 400 for a horizon trex kit. I've been looking for so long I just won't settle for anything but the real thing.
