HAL 9000 Panel (2001:A Space Odyssey) - pg.5 final Update

Re: HAL 9000 Panel (2001:A Space Odyssey)

Hello
I just flew over the thread and I must say WOW great job! Amazing effort put in there.
I would also say the back is a black anodised brushed aluminium plate.
Just wanted to ask if anyone is producing the lens kit?
as a (less good) alternative I suggest a fisheye lens converter (those that screw on a other lens ) but it does not have the dome shape. from the front it would look rather similar and they are rather cheap. check ebay or amazon such as vivitar or other brands , they exist in many sizes.
If I may propose one small detail: use L shaped aluminium profiles around the outside and screw from behind, this will hide the screws ;)
I think it is hard to get any closer to the real thing than this.
just a question: does the lamp in the film light brighter and darker sometimes? it seems more or less red in certain scenes or not?

Re: HAL 9000 Panel (2001:A Space Odyssey)

That OP is possibly the most detailed, and amazing build record I have ever seen. I now have added a HAL 9000 to my 'stuff I want to build' list. :)

HAL 9000 1:1 replica by AP-333

Just after finishing my first HAL Panel, I decided to bring it to the next level and started to build these two:
TWO identical 1:1 HAL 9000 full aluminum panels!
Both with original f=8mm NIKKOR lens ;)

No.1

No.2

It toke me some time to build these with the acuracy and very close tolerances, but I think they are as acurrate as they can possibly be to the screen used HAL.

The Story behind the twins:
These two became operational at the H.A.L. plant in Urbana, Illinois,
on the 30th December 2011. Their instructor was AP-333, and he ...
... just kidding :B

It started with a little luck on an eBay Nikkor lens auction.
I just couldn't resist after already having hold an original lens in my hands,
I really had to get me one of my own.
(you know exactly what I'm talking about :lol)

More Details:

During the long shipping time from US to Germany, I started to do more research on the prototype panel,
because it's clearly the basis for the screen used HAL.

1) Panel Depth

The panels depth dimension is mentioned in the description, on the Christies Prototype auction site [LINK]
"plate -- 4½" x 11¾" x ½"

2) Details
Thanks to Mikes (Sith Sheriff Brody) reference pictures [Post #43], that
show the panel from the side gave me following information:

- black brushed anodized aluminum panel face
- Trims do have a rabbet cut outs of the edges
- 8x holes with counter bores with equal spacing on sides
- Slot headed countersunk screws
- Correct ring shape and dimensions
- Cross bar (trim) is at the same height as the other trims

more details from Denis Gilliam's [LINK] 1:1 prototype rebuild.
(he took dimensions from the original prototype)

- 4x counter bores with equal spacing on top and bottom trims
- 4x threated screw holes on the back
(for the supposed attachment system, which he tried to reproduce)
- 4x threated pins for the wall mount system (NOT CONFIRMED)<- I took
his idea over, because its good way to get the panel mounted on the wall,
without breaking a hole in it for the long Nikkor lens.

3) The Parts

- NIKKOR fish-eye 1:8 f=8mm Nippon Kogaku Japan
- 1:1 100% aluminum panel with 24 threated screw holes around it, cross
bar groove (milled)
and four threated screw holes on the back for the attachemend system
- brushed, black anodised panel face
- 1:1 aluminum ring (lathed)
- 5x aluminum trims with correct screw hole spacing and trim profile
- High quality thin Vynil sticker (original label with correct dimensions)
- 3D printed grid with correct hole spacing and custom mixed antharzit
metalic paint
- Custom lens cap with Nikon F Lock system and integrated white LED,
battery compartment, alternativ DC-IN socket and on/off switch
(This cap secures the lens on the panel and centers the led in the middle)
- 4x threated pins for the wall mount system

I re-linked all the pictures & attachments from the fake "therpf .com" to "www.therpf.com" !
Now all contents should refer to this site and being displayed correctly again.

I hope we'll get the previous domain back so I can change it back.

Just saw this movie recently. recently? wt efff? Anyways, not a huge of a fan, tried liking, but if you don't like it, you don't like it.

But this, THE HAL9000 is a must have. Great work.

Thanks :)

The decal is a digitally restored copy of the original prototype panel from the Christie's auction.
I've printed them in a local print shop. If you need one, you can download the graphics from my first post in Chapter 8 The HAL | 9000 label and print them yourself or just PM me...I have still a couple left~

!!Please Note!!

I just found a mistake in my drawing!
The overall size of the HAL panel is 13.5" x 4.5" x 0.5" (height x width x depth) and not 13.75" as mistakenly shown in the drawing.
Apart from that all other dimension are correct as they are.
Sorry for that! I'll post an updated version soon.

For the Nikkor lens dimension please refer to the 3D.pdf

All the best for your build!
Show us a little of your work in progress :love

AP~

Hey !

Thanks a lot to AP-333, the HAL Stickers arrived Today!

I´ve set up a Blog on my Homepage :

blackblog

There i will post regulary Updates on my Work with HAL ;-)

And of course here, as soon as there will be significant updates ... (not only bla bla, like in my Blog ;-) )

Thanks again

Mike

Work is going on.

Just ordered the Aluminium Plate, and the Sideplanes.
Found a 82mm "Testing" Lens on Amazon, (no Nikkor...) but let´s see what it will look like.
While CADing HAL in Catia, i watched 2010 - The Year we made Contact, and realized they made HAL there out of crappy Plastics, the Groundplate is Grey instead of Black the Aluminium Ring around HALs Lens is about 3 Times Bigger than the Original HAL, and theres no Nikkor Lens at all ...
Okay, i read in the Internet that all Requisites from 2001 were Destroyed, and so they had to Recreate all from Pictures etc....
But i think everyone here could have made it more Authentic than they did in 2010 ...

Hello. I am considering one of the HAL900 props cuurently being sold. The HAL9000 panel is the product of the Artifactory -- the latest venture from Steve DymZak. I was wondering if the prop discussed in this thread has any relationship to Artifactory's product. I greatly admire the research and care which the builder in this thread applied to his creation. If his research was directly drawn on in creating Artifactory's HAL9000, the I would feel better paying the nearly $500 price for it. Does anyone know.
