New Vegas NCR Veteran Ranger Build

I create the 3 sections that will come together to form the microphone on the front of the mask. The 3 sections were Plastic Welded together and the seams were covered in Bondo. When they are sanded, they will be glued down, and a mesh insert will complete the interior and create a microphone-like mass.

Using the Pepakura templates, I cut out the item using styrene plastic. After it was glued on, the item was then fiberglassed to the mask, and then covered with Bondo until I could get a nice round shape to it. It is not yet completed, but is almost there.

Looking really good so far. I know how annoying it can be to build a costume that has never actually existed in the real world. Someone needs to tell video-game artists to start using more found parts. :lol

I cannot wait to see the finished project.

You know what's worse? 3 different masks exist.

1. Cover Art.
2. Promotional Art.
3. In Game Model.

So I'm trying to mix and match what I like best, I'll figure something out :)

Well done so far! I am sure the Kommisar's build probably saved you a ton of heartache on this build. Look forward to seeing more progress shots of the gas mask. I am doing a styrene build right now on some steampunk armor and this little Bondo trick might help me with all the little kinks.

I finally apply a layer of primer to the helmet to reveal areas which need more work filling. I will be using small bits of putty to fill these.

The breather area has each of the 3 sections built, the central tube will be constructed once I find a suitable material to use. I will most likely be using a 3/4" wooden dowel cut to length and inserted inside of the plastic, which will receive fiberglass reinforcement under it.

This replica revolver will be used as the primary prop weapon until I have the time to construct the Anti-Material Rifle.

This .45 holster has been modified to house the Replica Colt .45 I purchased, it will be further modified to be attached to my thigh.

This is the unmodified ammo belt, it will be cut and have the appropriate belt buckles added, and will have the side holster drop down attached.

These straps have been dyed and conditioned to the correct colour. They will be used as the chest and hip belts, along with the forearm straps.

The belt is basically butchered, it is cut in half and new buckles are installed which match the concept art of the NCR Veteran Ranger. None of the buckles are functional however, the original buckle located in what is now the back of the belt will be the only functional one.

With the correct buckles installed, this part of the costume is now completed. It will require one more simple modification, it needs a strap heading down to the holster which will be attached to my thigh.

awesome work so far. I had heard of the technique of heating and shaping foam for armor but hadn't seen it practiced until now. Looks excellent. This costume should frighten some people for sure!

Thanks for the compliments! I had heard about people using it with Mass Effect costumes, but I didn't know the full extent of what this stuff could be used for until I started looking at the RPF again. I spent a lot of time lurking over the past few years, but now that I don't have to post in order to keep my account, I feel more welcome being here.

His build did help me out a lot, especially when it came to what to use for the dome and the foam, I did PM him several times about those! It was the first time I had used foam, but it is apparently used widely nowadays. I've always preferred using styrene immediately when it came to Pepakura builds though, there's always so much heartache for me when I have to deal with fiberglassing cardstock, then slapping Bondo on top.

Bitchin'. Man, wouldn't it be great to get all the NCR costumes together at some con?

That would be awesome! I know that Kommissar is going to Comic Con, maybe I'll meet up with him down there.

any stencils available?
What kind of stencils are you looking for? I photoshopped all of the stencils that are put on the armour, along with the armour itself. I am afraid I can't release the armour stencils until I get permission from Kommissar though, he did do the original design, I just use Photoshop to extract my templates out of his costume pics.

Just picked up some more leather for some arm straps along with some more styrene to do the arm and hand armour. It's coming along fast!

Last night I worked on the hose attachment on the face of the mask, pics will come tonight once I get it cleaned up and primed.

The hose fitting is completed, it is given the specific look as seen in concept art with the nut-like base and stepped cylinders.

The microphone area is installed, mesh will be applied when the adhesive has dried.

Using some vinyl mesh, I cut out a piece appropriate to fit in the required area. I use GOOP sparingly on the corners that way it is attached but still floats above the plastic under it.

The holster and belt setup is worked on. All of the belts are now completed except for the horizontal belt, which will be completed soon.

The costume is now starting to come together. All that is required to do to the mask is etch in some fine details, paint it, then install the lenses. The dome however still needs to have the front cut and the camera box is still incomplete.

Kickass can't wait to see the finnished result!
You did pick the coolest character from fallout new vegas. :)
The ONLY cool New Vegas character, IMO ;) Well Cassidy was pretty cool, but other than that most characters in that game were pretty bland, especially that Arcade Gannon dude, he bored me to death.

Using more styrene, I am able to trace out pieces of the camera box and glue them together, this helps fabricate the section to the right ear of the helmet.

When the parts are dry, I take the completed sections and attach them to each other, this creates a larger prop that will be affixed to the side of the dome when completed, and post-fiberglassing.

A preview of the helmet is displayed with the camera box taped to the side. The WiFi Antennae is also taped in place to convey an idea of what the final product will look like.

Camera box has been fiberglassed :)

I also cut the forearms and hand plates, I will be fiberglassing those when I'm done with shaping them. Pics will come later tonight!!

One thing I am sort of worried about is the antennae that I picked for the side of the helmet, I think it may be a bit too large and long, what does everyone else think??

I'm quite sure you and I used the same antennae, lol.

I just used a saw to shorten mine, bondoed, and re-painted.

Looks great so far, keep up the good work!
