Dave, it's just another insignia graphic. It's no more accurate or special than the other insignia drawings that have been out there for years. It is nicce that they're promoting the new film, though.

I understood the reasoning for hte teaser poster's layout, but on the wallpaper, if the solid blue background is supposed to represent Spock, the Enterprise arrowhead should have the science emblem rather than the command emblem.

Sigh. I am SUCH a geek to notice that...

Should it...? Do we know that the emblem didn't change from the star to departmental insignia and then back again later on, when all of Starfleet used the 'Command' emblem?

Well, as early as "The Cage" they were using departmental insignia:

which is supposed to be about 13 years before the "Menagerie" episodes.
