Soulinertia's screen accurate Star Lord Jacket build - Guardians of the Galaxy

None of the jackets I've seen out there can satisfy my desire for ultimate screen accuracy perfection (a compulsive disorder I know many of us here in the RPF community suffer from, lol), so I've decided to set out and try to build my own jacket. This is my first time working with a leather project of this scale, so it's going to be a learning process.

Here is a study I put together for all of the jacket components:

Instead of starting completely from scratch, I decided to build off of a base jacket. Another reason I did this is because I want that real vintage worn in look and feel to the jacket. I plan to wear this one often so I want it to be durable, comfortable and look natural yet, kinda futuristic. Not costumey at all. Fortunately I happened to have the perfect jacket on hand.

This is an old vintage jacket from the 70's I picked up a few years ago for my first Tyler Durden costume. I think the color is almost perfect. It maybe a little light in some areas, but this is something I'll address later.

The first thing I did was remove the material for the button holes since Quill's jacket is a zip-up.

I also removed the pockets.

I also hacked off the ridiculously large collar.

Another thing I noticed were the curved cuffs so I drew on the shapes with a sharpie and cut them out.

For the shoulder material I needed some additional leather and since the core of the jacket is a cotton twill I took the leather strips from the back.

The jacket is pretty short so I cut off about 7" from the bottom.

General placement for the grommets.

After marking out exactly where I wanted them I cut a slit with an x-acto.

First grommet installed!

Here is what it looks like from the back.

I put the jacket on a mannequin to check the fit and placement of everything.

I loosely placed the additional material on the shoulders.

Then I cut out the basic shape for the shoulder pieces.

And installed the grommets.

So that's where I'm at so far. I still have a ton of sewing to do on all these pieces.

Here is the twill fabric I'll be using for the rest of the jacket.

Next step screen printing!

Nice work! Gotta respect the bold 'attack and hack' you've taken to your base so far... :thumbsup

This is looking really awesome! Like laellee, I am loving the "attack and hack" approach -- I tend to hesitate until I can't hesitate any longer. There's something very liberating about just jumping in!

Can't wait to see more progress and the finished jacket!

Thanks for the comments guys. :thumbsup

I'll be doing some experimentation with leather embossing this evening. Stay tuned . . .

Are you using rivets or the heads of snaps for the round metal details? Any rivets I've found that have a large enough head have too long of a post.

I'm using claw rivets actually. First post updated with my study sheet if you want to see a pic.

Where did you find the 12 mm (1/2 inch) round flat rivets/studs? I have searched all over and can only find 12 mm in domed. Do you have a source for those grommets too? Everything is looking fabulous. Great job!

So glad I found your thread Soulinertia. I'm going to be following this for sure. I've purchased a super cheap red pleather jacket that I plan on modifying the snot out of thanks to my costumer friend, I hope I can get as close as I can to all the details on the jacket. I'm worried that the jacket is too bright of a red, I've heard Jacquard paints can help with that but I have no experience with them which makes me leary of trying and ruining the project. At any rate I'm excited to see your progress and admire your fearlessness in jumping right in to modifying that jacket.

Try a search on "Round Flat Top Studs" ;)

I made a little bit of progress last night. I created a template for the shoulder design in EVA foam to check form and fit before cutting it out of leather for embossing.

It looks a little rough because the paper I spray-mounted to the foam is still attached.

I discovered due to the thickness of the leather my templates were a little thick so I re-cut them thinner.

After cutting it out of a rigid piece of scrap leather I placed it behind my jacket leather, wet it down and pressed HARD.

I still wasn't getting the definition I wanted so I let it dry overnight.

Here is the back side with the rigid leather piece removed.

I added a light coating of spray-mount on the leather piece and then placed it back into position and worked it into the jacket leather.

Next I'll be applying glue to the edges and working the leather around each piece to bring out even more definition!

The first rule about Star Lord's jacket is you don't talk about Star Lord's jacket!

The detail is really starting to come out. This is going to be a great looking jacket.

Did you have any luck hunting down the zipper? I found the company that makes them but can't find an actual source for purchasing one since I'm not a supplier. Your jacket looks great so far! :)
