TRON 3 ?!

Disney knew that Star Wars is a guaranteed cash cow and even more so if there's any parts of the property they don't have their hands on yet. Just putting out the original movies without the CGI would make them a mint. This is a cash flow disney needs after so many flops. The problem is Disney has been going down in quality for years as the older people retired or left and after Eisner, for better or worse, left.

I wouldn't say that Disney has had a string of flops, they've had some less than stellar live action films but the Marvel films are doing quite well and their animated films, for the most part, are doing quite well also. And that's only their theatrical releases, they're probably still making tons of money through home video and streaming releases, then there's all of the stuff they have on their 2 channels. They had a rough patch before Eisner came on board but by the time he left Disney has been at the top of their game with attendance at their parks so high that they're constantly raising the price of admission in an attempt to limit attendance. Their animation studio did lag for a while but since around the time Bolt came out they've been enjoying a second renaissance. Their live action movies have never been their strong suit, but they've had their share of successes and all in all, I highly doubt that Disney is losing a lot of money anywhere.

It's reassuring that it's still alive. Better to be in cryogenic freeze than dead. Although they really actually need to bring Tron back, or maybe at least Beck as Tron 2.0. I thought the movie was really just getting started when Rinzler started to realize who he was and was so hyped for the next installment.

And bring back Tron Uprising. I loved that show.

...And bring back Tron Uprising. I loved that show.

Agreed. The writing may not have always been up to par but, visually, one of the most arresting shows, let alone a cartoon, I've seen in a very long time.

Also, Tron 3 never died for me as I wrote a near-300 page script for fun to tide me over.

I saw the original TRON during its theatrical run, and I really enjoyed the tie-in with Legacy and Uprising.

Tron: Legacy made 400$ million worldwide in box office. Not sure what it made on the DVD / Blu-ray front, but just looking at the total Box Office:

Film studios, on average, take in about 50% of the gross. Different in different countries, territories, but for the sake of simplicity.... Disney got half of the $400 million, or $200 million. Put that against the movie's budget well over $100 million, plus marketing and distribution costs, and Disney MAYBE broke even. They could have even LOST money on the film.

And then Tomorrowland tanked (and to me, seemed to be only about 75% of the way "there"), and Disney flipped quickly out of the futuristic / sci-fi premise on its own intellectual properties, and switched to the newly acquired Marvel and Lucasfilm IPs. And THEY have made the Mouse very, very rich...

I'm afraid the window was missed for TRON 3. You're not going to get the actors back 5 or 10 years from now to do this.

I thought in Asia and Russia the movie did much better than it did in North America.

Maybe. Maybe not. That depends on a lot of factors.

In the mid-2000s Vin Diesel and Paul Walker had both left the sputtering Fast & Furious franchise.

Uhhhh can we see this script? I need something to tide me over!

Maybe. It needs another going through to rework some things and I'd like to make some illustrations to go with it. I know the kind of story I came up with will never be made so I'd like it to be fleshed out as possible if anyone else is gonna lay eyes on it.

Lots of data below, but the $400 million gross is worldwide. Regardless of what the film made overseas (best in Japan), the total is the total. Disney got about half. And while $200 million is a big paycheck, production costs had to come out of that (or against that amount), so we don't know what Disney actually "made" on the film. While it certainly indicates a public appetite for the film, the numbers are simply not strong enough to make TRON 3 a top priority for Disney.

Yeah, for comparison Disney released Toy Story 3 and Alice in Wonderland that same year and each grossed over $1 billion worldwide.

I think if they took a chance on it though, Tron Ascension could hit at least $700 million this time around. More if it actually has a compelling story.

I'd strangely be OK with that. Not too keen on it being a true reboot though. I'd like to see the story already established continue on.

It doesn't need a reboot. It just needs a green light with Garret Hedlund attached and lets get this thing rolling! I loved their short for "The next day."

They should have invested to keep it going. Maybe Legacy didn't meet expectations, but at least give it a solid chance that it could pick up pace and yield a stronger take for a third film. The money they sometimes dump into other film extras is crazy....

They don't actually make a loss on these movies, its all creative accounting. I know because i have family members who work in this industry.

Apparently, Harry Potter made a loss despite grossing a billion dollars, go figure!
