They don't show him dying. The throw looks pretty survivable to me, at least in other action movies it would be. In my head he survived until I read a quote that can be proved to be from Cameron saying he died or they come out with a new DVD/Blu-Ray with a deleted scene.
According to some guy on YouTube: "I think I heard James Cameron actually say he did die in Terminator. I can't remember where I read or heard it, basically he was hurt badly and the guy who gave him his clothes called for help and he was pronounced dead when he and the other guy were found."
