Star Wars: Battlefront

Yep, Battle Station is the new mode and it has three stages. The first stage consists of the rebels knocking out a Star Destroyer in space similar to walker assault with Y-Wings attacking vulnerable areas after the rebels shoot down enough TIE Fighters. Then the next stage continues to one of three Death Star maps: Defense Sector, Power Sector, or Command Sector (the command sector is my favorite mainly for the viewing room). Afterwards, the final stage is back in space for the trench run which has some ROTJ inspired sections you fly through in a check point system (but if the game assigns you your turn to make the trench run and you're either far away from the next check point or have low health, you're going to be shot down as the TIE Fighters swarm you to stop you).

However, if the Empire wins any one of the stages and stops the rebels, it either restarts back at the Star Destroyer map to start another round of Battle Station or assigns a round of Blast or Fighter Squadron in the same outer space maps. So you could have several rounds in a row of the same Star Destroyer map due to the lack of variety of game modes which has happened several times to me at least. It's probably my favorite Fighter Squadron map, however, this is supposed to be a Death Star DLC and I'd prefer being in the Death Star.

That seems like something they'll likely work to fix then, more along the lines of tweaking the difficulty at the various stages. Put simply, if one side is always winning, particularly after the "learning curve" part is done with, then they'll almost certainly tweak the balance. Might take 'em a month or two, but they'll get around to it. The thing is, if folks lose interest in this DLC then they'll be less likely to buy the inevitable Rogue One DLC for the final release. And that'll be a major part of Disney/LFL's merchandising. It will, I think, be one of the only Rogue One products in the video game industry. So, that may light a fire under DICE and get them to move a bit faster than usual to tweak stuff.

I actually really like Fighter Squadron, but I can see where endless rounds of it would get irritating, especially if you AREN'T given an opportunity to play in the interior of the Death Star.

I thought you could just play "Blast" mode to play inside the Death Star straight up. If this is not the case I may just skip this until you can. I like space battles but like others I just wanna play inside.

Well, you can...sort of....except that--just like ALL the expansions--you enter a multiplayer game and it puts you into whatever game mode it wants. You want fighter squadron in Bespin? Nah, we will put you into the eight or ten other games you don't want to play. Want to play inside the Death Star? Well, we will put you into the Battle Station game and make you fly.
It's bad enough you spend more time waiting to get into or out of a game than you do playing, let alone being put into games you don't want to play. They need to allow you to actually choose the game mode you want, and they also should allow off-line skirmish for waaaay more games than what they have done.

Actually, you CAN select which mode you want to play within the DLC...but it'll only last for that map.

So, on Outer Rim, if you want to play only extraction, you can select extraction from within the DLC's menu...but then once the map's done, you're off to Blast or whatever. Same for Bespin with Sabotage or Fighter Squadron, and so on. Basically, you get to pick your mode for one map, and then you're back into the regular rotation. And there's no way to build, say, a custom rotation for yourself. It's one of the rather glaring flaws of the game, in my opinion.

I haven't picked up the game in a long time. I'm going to pop in to see what's new nowadays.

Mouse/Keyboard are my default for FPS games ... which makes flying vehicles near impossible for me to play. I forgot, is it possible to have the settings where the XBOX controller takes over when you're in a vehicle then revert to mouse/keyboard when on foot?

Isn't that the truth, it's an amazingly beautiful game and even the character models look really good for being based on the actors 30 years ago.

Amazing looking game. I love how on Hoth there's sparkles in the snow and you get almost blinded coming out of a cave into the open area for a moment.

That's about it though. I find the mechanics annoying, the weapons lame, the maps boring, and the gameplay monotonous. I'm also not a fan of non-movie tech like jump packs and shields.

I think this game is par for the Star Wars game course though. None of them really hold my interest after a week or so of playing them.

Soo if anyone is interested, you can buy the game at redbox for 8.99 right now.

Finally picked up a copy seeing as it was dirt cheap...

But the expansion is 60$??? And you have to have PS-plus to play online?

That's pretty lame.

My biggest complaint has got to be that you can't just get in vehicles... Like battleFIELD...

Finding the tokens and magically being in mid flight is lame.

I still think battlefield 2 on PC will never be topped as far as balance and mechanics in a FPS.

Man I miss that game.

Hard to believe the games were made by the same company

I finally had a chance to play the Death Star levels. Very atmospheric. Lots of fun. I played a bunch of battlestation, one round of Blast, and one or two rounds of the Fighter Squadron variant which is...weird. I'm having a hard time getting a handle on it, mostly because the ships behave differently from what I recall. TIE Interceptors now no longer fire missiles and instead use this laser blast thing, I gather? Also, it seems every rebel flies an A-wing, which is still a pain in the ass to hit. Even if you're going full throttle in either TIE, you can't really keep pace with 'em.

I think I really just need to get the hang of it, but so far, out of around 3-4 rounds of Fighter Squadron on the Death Star maps, the Rebels repeatedly blew up the cruiser. I still haven't played the trench run. I guess because the Imperials always seemed to defeat the Rebels in the Battlestation round.

I also noticed that they considerably reworked the Traits, which seems to make Scout a little less optimal, and other traits a little more useful. That's a good thing overall, but I miss being able to sprint with impunity at level 1 for Scout. :)

They did exactly what you suggested they'd do. They considerably knocked down the health of the Star Destroyer so it's almost impossible for the Empire to win the first round unless the rebels are playing extra horribly.

I still hope they add more modes to the inside however. I really dislike playing Blast mode as there's no objective to it with much of the match outcomes being due to luck if the game spawns you in the right place at the right time.

My nephew got this for Christmas so I finally got to play it. It confirms a lot of what I thought (and why I didn't buy it) that it was mainly a casual game. Probably 25% of my view is because I had to play with a Xbox One controller, which is like playing with an arm behind my back (vs. mouse and keyboard) which is not right for a FPS game. :) The fighter combat in this game, IMO, is THE worst of any SW game so far. Rogue Squadron is so much superior to this. The air combat in this makes Battlefield 3 and 4 jet flying, which is challenging, a piece of cake. I found it too hard to track fighters and then to actually damage them. A torpedo hit on a TIE is like a spit ball. The ground combat isn't bad, but it's a little too casual, just hold the shoot button and wait for death. Oh, and to be clear I'm basing this on a split screen game. We can only play survival, AT-AT escort (not sure of the name), and fighter squadron.

Hopefully in the sequel they remove the ridiculous pickups and have vehicles waiting like in Battlefield. I'm not sure if MP has classes, but the part we played doesn't so I want classes back. That way you have anti-armor and don't have to wait for a pickup. It looks really good, it just needs more depth. Oh and also more fighters, space combat, and boarding of ships in space like Battlefront 2. They should be able to do seamless ground to space transitions for that type of mission in 2017.

I had a chance to play the new Scarif content recently and while it's fun and atmospheric, it could stand some serious improvement. So far, I've seen Rebels win once out of four times playing through the whole Infiltration run. It ends up playing out similarly to the Death Star stuff. Rebels always win the first round space battle. Rebels always win the second round sabotage. Rebels almost always lose the "Get the tape to the extraction point" round, and we repeat. I've yet to play anything other than blast and Infiltration, so no walker assault or any other modes.

I have to say that while I do mostly enjoy the game, it's got some major flaws in its design that I hope DICE addresses next time around. Here's what I'd do to VASTLY improve the game:

- Release it with a true offline mode. People need to have a chance to get the hang of the vehicles and learn the maps, and an offline mode with customizable AI difficulty would be ideal for this. It sucks that all we have are the missions and lame skirmish mode limited to original release content, but none of the DLC.

- A true custom playlist for consoles. Well, really for everyone. Set your own preferred map rotation, and the game will simply run matchmaking to take you to those maps. No forced playlist.

- For "chain" rounds (e.g. infiltration), allow each link in the chain to be played as its own separate battle. So, if you just wanna play the sabotage part of Skarif infiltration, you can do that.

- For "Get X to Y location" maps, get rid of the whole "Hold X to interact" thing, or at least change it substantially. Option 1 would be to just have a player running over it pick up the thing like any other pickup. Option 2 would be to have it be a simple single button press, rather than a hold, with a decent sized radius (this is a BIG problem on Scarif where you have to be standing on top of the data tape and looking at it just so to pick it up), and let players press another button to DROP the item if they accidentally grab it.

- Create a new mode that's somewhat similar to Supremacy and Walker Assault. Call it "Holdout" or something. The mode would work as follows: Attackers have a limited number of respawns. Attackers must capture positions before moving forward. This is done similar to the capture points in your standard battlefield game. You need a sufficient number of attackers in the zone, and they have to outnumber defenders by a sufficient amount. Defenders get unlimited respawns and are trying to run out the clock. At the very end of the map, if Defenders have successfully delayed the enemy, they are given a chance to run to escape ships. The escape ships cannot be destroyed, but if the defender successfully escapes they get a big point bonus. Attackers who manage to kill an escaping defender also get a point bonus. There is no respawn at this stage. Kills by defenders of attackers just count for normal kills, so the incentive is really to get the hell out of there.

- Take the former mode and make an "extreme" version of it. In this version, you also have AI troops involved to pad out the battlefield. The AI troops cannot capture or defend zones, and their losses don't affect the total body count. You could also include a defender respawn/reinforcement limit. So, if Attackers manage to wipe out the defenders, then that's it, game over. Attackers win. All player deaths count towards the body count.

- Get rid of Hutt contracts. *****, I HATE this stuff. I'm so tired of grinding to unlock guns. We should just be able to buy them with credits once you hit the eligible level. It's especially annoying when the contracts themselves have some ridiculous requirement like "Kill X number of enemies as a hero in ABC game mode." All that does is make everyone try to become the hero, which is usually quite limited, and detracts from gameplay. The only time this stuff works well is when it "forces" you to try new equipment (e.g. "Use 10 flash grenades.") That stuff is fine. I don't mind it if we absolutely MUST include it. But the rest of it? Screw it. Getting killstreaks to unlock stuff (e.g. "Get to level 3 on XYZ trait") is a huge pain in the ass in a game where time to kill is something like 1-2 seconds max. So either get rid of Hutt contracts, or really change how they work.

Having played Battlefield 3 and 4, DICE has a track record of having missions, which I assume the "Hutt Contracts" are, where they force you to use X gun and get X amount of kills to unlock something. Sometimes those are a LOT of fun, but some are a grind, which they should test and figure out first. I remember Battlefield 3 had one of these where you had to get a bunch of kills with the EOD bot, which was hard.

My son plays it and enjoys it for what it is. A Star Wars game were he can be a Stormtrooper and not have to be super skilled to get some enjoyment out of it.

Did something get updated during the air battle games? I used to be able to take out so many people with reckless abandon, now I have to track one pilot for too long it seems.

^ I was wondering about that, too. I just got it a couple of weeks ago, and watched a couple of YT videos for tips about starfighter missions that were posted a year ago, and some of what they say doesn't seem to be the case anymore. Particularly the hero ships---they seem to have been downgraded.
