The Martian Space Suit

just made this account so i could say thanks to everyone on here who have provided reference photos and information on this thread! It's really helped me make my own costume, though I've had to take more cheaper budget route. I've got my version about 75% done and it should be done by march!

I still have a few patch sets left if anyone is interested. I have no plans on making anymore after these are gone.

Hi all, my first post here, been lurking for a few weeks now and I'm trying to build an outfit for the oscars, I'm going to be Mark Wattney obviously. What do you think about the helmet, is pressure/vacuum forming the best way to get a nice visor? How about the other parts, If I can get the dimensions right by carving, would vacuum forming/painting be a good way to get nice looking parts?(I'm not going for 100% accuracy, im going for a costume party ;) ) I'm very new to building props, I've been doing metal work for real armours and 3D printing whenever my printer works at all so this is a bit of a new world for me.

I was thinking of doing the oval dome visor first, then other parts of the helmet from slightly smaller domes cut and painted.

If you want to scratch build a helmet the old fashion way here's some orthographic views of my 3d model with a couple of dimensions as a starting point, you should be able to figure out the rest for yourself. Enjoy:

Oh my, thanks so much! This actually helps a lot since I haven't had a clue on the neck ring dimensions (and for some reason didnt understand it to be an oval..). Today I'm going to build the vacuum forming rig and do some tests with 1mm acrylic.

My idea was that I will form 2 oval hemispheres, the other clear and the other white. With the white portion being the lower half that I will cut/carve/paint and the other being the visor. Now I could incorporate details on the lower half mold already since I have more exact dimensions/picture, nice!

One tiny little detail about the harness has been bugging me for a while and I think I've finally solved it.

Whilst going over the list of parts for the harness which someone (sorry, I forget who) posted to google docs I started to check the items off against some of the detailed pictures of the suit that I've collected from various sources. I realised there was one key part of the harness which I couldn't find an image for. Coming up from the back of the harness is webbing which passes though a small silver tri-glide (I'm guessing 33mm), followed by an orange 45mm tri-glide. The webbing then disappears up under the "backpack" and because I've seen promo shots of them wearing the harness without the backpack I assumed it must either attach to the suit or to the "armour" that the backpack attaches to.

I was watching some of the extras on the Blu-Ray and noticed that for a fraction of a second we get to see the back of Matt Damon wearing the whole suit and armour but without the backpack. Sorry about the quality of the image below but it was a quick photo of my TV. I'll try get a proper screen cap of it later to be sure.

It looks like the webbing connects to the armour using another Nautic Cobra. Another piece of webbing then connects from the armour onto one half of the orange Cobra S which connects to the backpack once it's in place. This unfortunately means that if you wish to be accurate you are going to need 5 Nautic's not 4.

This is what I suspected as well hence my request for 5 Nautic. It's not clear how it's attached considering the other Nautics use custom brass male ends. I can only assume it's the same with this one.

I'm not sure how the webbing is routed and sewn there either, looks like there's some unknown silver part between the orange 45mm triglade and the Nautic Cobra buckle.

Oh,. so either get another nautic buckle,. or hide it under the backpack,. Think Im going to do a "hide it under the backpack and get a nautic buckle later",.

But I did get the perfect buildbox for this project,.

Behold the screen acurate box and lamp,. Well, I think I saw a metallic handle on the box in the movie..
I have some more stuff,. Just have to find it and put it in the box.

Cheers for the info Ande

Two trips to Ikea this week for some other stuff. I might get the cutlery and chair later,.
