1:1 Millennium Falcon Cockpit Replica - Group Build

Hi everyone! I'm a new member here and I stumbled upon this thread a few days ago. All I can say is WOW!!! I'm amazed at the talent that is on this site!!! I have a few questions. How many people are working on this? What is the Maker Fair thing? How do you have access to a laser cutter?

God Bless

Hi Sooner,

Thanks for stopping by and welcome aboard! The talent here on the RPF is amazing! This site NEVER gets boring. There are officially 12 of us working on the project with many contributors. We're scattered all over world doing our part to help make this dream become a reality. The bulk of the force is located here in Huntsville - that's where the build lives and breathes.

The Maker Fair is an organization / event created by MAKE magazine that highlight arts & crafts, engineering and science related projects along with the Do-It-Yourself mindset. I believe there are different chapters in many cities.

I was lucky enough to run into the owner of a local engineering lab (Mind Gear Labs) and he offered some floor space for the project. The lab has 3 3D printers, a CNC machine, laser cutter and various others tools for makers/inventors/engineers/DIYers to come in and tinker. The laser cutter/CNC and 3D printers has completely changed the way I look at the project. If I can't find it... build it! :)

Thanks again and I hope this helps.

Hi Gang,

Work continues... :)

Is this just an approximation to the ESB greeblie? The real piece is just a thin plate, not a box. The center rectangle is a really thin metal plate with text and arrows on it.

Hey C,

I'm basing the find off of this screen grab - note just right of the Martin Baker chair on the right. Note the two regulators just right of the cowl. The similarities are pretty close

Also, note the 3 holes on each side

Hi Gang,

Interesting day we had yesterday. Got to the lab early to work on the Volvo panels, cut some more 3D puzzle pieces when I got a call from the education lead asking if I could bring the quad and console to the local science center...

Started to sand the flash from the Volvo panels

Just as we began to really get settled to work on the project(s)... I got the call. We scrambled and the quad and console were now on display at the local science center. We had a great time and this time... no little hands... ;)

Hi Gang,

An expected show and a roller coaster of other events prevented me from moving forward. What's worse is that I accidently did something stupid... UGH...

Hi F,

Spot on? I thought it was a ILM piece. You're a master! I hope you don't mind our paying "homage" to your design? Looking at this piece of artwork, I can't think of anything better. :)

As far as the actual screen prop, there are so few actual images of the entire prop and we've been able to identify only 1 actual part of the quad. We just dont know what the original designers used and/or how it was assembled. So long as you and the rest of the SW community is happy with a sort of hybrid quad... :)

Just outstanding work as always, you guys are like machines (or droids).:)

Hi SB,

Thanks so much! OH... I mean "Beep Boop Boop Beep Beep"

I cannot get tired of seeing that console guys:cool Carry on;)

LOL! Thank you, Sir!

Is this something you've hoped for all along, or is this ... a new hope?

Hi Mike,

After last night's debacle with the pinstripes... I should be able to "Strike Back" and get them done!

Homage?? This thread is so great Im honored that you used one of my pix for a little reference!
I cant wait to see this thing done, its amazing!!!!

Your 5 footer quad looks awfully familiar.

a great man once said to me, "There are many variations of the quad." The excuse for differences I'm using is this was a slightly different model year.
I am going to do my best to make it close, though. But I maintain, Sofa king's is an piece of art.

And of the quads shown in the film, I think the ones on the model are the ones to go by. The one that Ford and Hammil sat behind, while impressive in its own right, doesn't work on the exterior of the ship. If you look at it carefully, you can see that the center post of the yoke actually goes INTO the body of the gun, making it impossible for the gun to lie flat against the hull.

Now how are you supposed to cover your escape if you can't shoot straight aft, huh?

(plus I think the shooting model version looks cooler)

Actually, The exterior quad gun as it exists on the “5-footer” these days is not how it was originally attached. For ANH, it was attached properly, matching the interior set quad at least in how it was attached (or rather how the set gave the illusion thereof). Very few decent ref still images of the correct attachment exist for public consumption. The exterior quad gun version on the “5-footer” that makes the tours has ref pix in spades, but it is a mightily butchered and perverted affair compared to how it started life.
