1:1 Millennium Falcon Cockpit Replica - Group Build

Hey Sofa, I have been following the project for a while now, and am always amazed at the attention to detail and craftsmanship of the whole thing. You guys are doing a fantastic job. One question, are the plans still for a complete falcon?

Also, it seems that when they are done with the movie prop, they could be great stewards and donate to the cause. I dont know why they wouldnt!!!

Hi K,

Thanks so much and thank you for the continued support!

The plan is still to create the entire ship. Unfortunately, we've been curbed by only 3 things... Time, Space and Money. If I were to win the lottery or somehow came into an exorbitant amount of money this project would take off!!! ;)

It would be a thrill if the powers that be over a Disney donated to the cause. That would be a dream come true!

Hey FF,

Ask and you all shall receive... I'll post a few concept images next to their real life counterparts. :)

Using bleed free painters tape I cut out the mask
20161211_063636_zpsef4f7zp3.jpg

Carefully applied the tape to the panel
20161211_063642_zps3wdcdcip.jpg

Sprayed a simple tac layer (mist) and waited for it to dry before adding the next several layers (5-7 total layers)

Removed the bleed free tape...

Didn't bleed but it did remove a lot of paint... UGH

Still need to add some pinstripes and silver greeblies

Those two new screens sit atop of the panel
20161211_081923_zpsmijv88nf.jpg

I'll probably paint them either black or silver
20161211_081935_zpsfq6lir5c.jpg

I then adhered all the other little greeblies
20161211_082859_zpshoqe8bza.jpg

20161211_082904_zpslunffvkl.jpg

Need to add screws to keep in place
20161211_082907_zpsvtlhvwu7.jpg

Not quite finished yet!
20161211_082913_zpspvmwlweg.jpg

Masked off the other panel
20161211_084107_zpsgnoaj8ft.jpg

Another 5-7 layers of light paint and then I removed the mask almost immediately after the final coat
20161211_085157_zpscezalgg6.jpg

Nice clean edges
20161211_085502_zps0cfwsuh3.jpg

20161211_085513_zpsmwpg0v5s.jpg

I might add a black and red pin stripe to the edges to clean them up
20161211_085542_zpssdk6y5se.jpg

20161211_085614_zpsaysrphi7.jpg

Just a few more greeblies to go, weathering and pinstripes and this panel is done!

Lots of time off approaching so I'm hoping for some MAJOR progress! Stay Tuned! :)

I love the red and black fields! Really cool, I can't wait to see them in situ!

About the half-walls leading up to the cockpit: Would it have been more labour saving to cover the end edges of the wall in a suitable material like the black rubber flooring mat, rather than sanding and grinding?

Hey FF,

Thanks! I'm really happy with the foot well panel as well. It DEF pays homage (direct copy) to the quad gunner station (which I would love to recreate) and the red and black areas just add to the overall look and feel!

I considered capping the corridor panel ends with MDF but I quickly realized that would push the panel edges out 1/8" leaving it uneven with the lower platform edges. I could always cover the platform edges with MDF but I need the screws exposed "just in case" I need to mod the platform.

Speaking of the rubber matting... we're getting close to permanently adhering the matting in place! :)

Cool!! When I see those panels, I wanna take my board and pop a few one wheel turn:D Great update once again Sofa!

Thank you, Sir! Pop Away! :)

Those foot well panels really make me want to recreate the gunner station! I wonder if I can convince Wavey to "loan" me all his gunner greeblies? ;)

Hi Gang,

Would like to get some opinions... In the OT, there were several corridor pads that had been removed exposing the wiring, pipes and insulation. Would you guys / gals like to see the same thing on one of these panels?

Ideas? Opinions?

Hey SK, I love the idea of exposed cabling and wiring.

That said, the corridor is going to be subject to a lot of foot traffic when on display and may be less visible to you than the cockpit (you can only be on one side of the display at a time). So, unfortunately, you'll need to worry about visitors either breaking or stealing exposed pieces -I think anything inside those panels might be tempting to fans with no scruples.

Sorry to get all "real" on you, hopefully you've already considered this in your design and assembly.

I think that would be really cool, but it's important not to overdo it. One or two pads removed would in my opinion be more than enough.
