Thermal Monitor from Universal Soldier - IDENTIFIED!

This one is killing me.

These are the wrist mounted heat sensors seen in Universal Soldier.

They are actually quite bulky, appear to have a metal body and buttons that one would associate with a recorder. They also have a flip open lid, but that may have been added later.

Some if not all of this must be a found item. Would LOVE to find one of these!

Keep in mind, this movie was filmed in 91, so it is not likely to be any kind of MP3 player.

Re: Help me identify the heat sensor watch from Universal Solider

Bought and paid for! YOU JUST MADE MY DAY!!!

Re: Help me identify the heat sensor watch from Universal Solider

Universal soldier I believe...GM
Oops my bad missed the first post...

Re: Help me identify the heat sensor watch from Universal Solider

I figured since it was strapped to his wrist, it probably had something to do with the
super sentai series in japan or as we call them power rangers.

Re: Heat sensor watch from Universal Solider - IDENTIFIED!

That's pretty funny. A slightly modified toy. How do they get away with some of this stuff?

Re: Heat sensor watch from Universal Solider - IDENTIFIED!

OOH! Love it!!!!!!

Nice work!

PS: I never type in bold; that's how cool I think this is!

Re: Heat sensor watch from Universal Solider - IDENTIFIED!

Art, curious to see what you do with the inside. Looks like a simple cutout (square insert) was dropped in the light up window.

Re: Heat sensor watch from Universal Solider - IDENTIFIED!

@Rylo, we are doing a group of these, so I'll have them cast up, and then start cutting up the castings to make them like the original. The one thing I really want to figure out is whether the top is a flip top or not. In the movie it LOOKS like the lid snaps open on a spring, but the toy doesn't seem to be spring-loaded. So... what I want to do is see if it is just movie magic that makes it LOOK like it is spring-loaded or if it truly has a spring on the lid.

Re: Heat sensor watch from Universal Solider - IDENTIFIED!

I'll have to watch the movie again. Always enjoyed it. I'm guessing the aforementioned movie magic on the lid.

Crud... it actually DOES look like it is spring loaded... :(

Re: Thermal Monitor from Universal Solider - IDENTIFIED!

Learning more. There definitely WERE a few mods made to the toy. Going to try to list them out as we go.

First, the easiest one, the red spring-clip on the back of the monitor was removed as seen in the photos below.

Re: Thermal Monitor from Universal Solider - IDENTIFIED!

The wrist strap appears to simply be a length of coyote/tan 1 1/4" nylon web strapping (usually used on web belts) with a 1" bit of velcro sewn to it.

Re: Thermal Monitor from Universal Solider - IDENTIFIED!

The two red spring clips hold the top of the monitor to the bottom. For the movie, I believe they removed the back clip as shown above, and then flipped the front clip upside down and cut a groove in the top so the clip holds the lid in place.
