DoJ-Inspired Wonder Woman

My first impression of Wonder Woman's new costume was entirely negative; of all the excellent original designs and fan-art out there, it felt like a cop-out. But after the WW first-look video, and seeing the great costumes other's have made, it's grown on me immensely! So I decided to rebuild a costume I'd made a few years back, with a Gal Gadot twist. These are some of my favorite concept drawings that I've based things off of:

Plans:

Cloak: Cheap piece of garbage military-style blanket from Amazon
I ordered two of these to get enough length for the cloak, but with two returns and two reorders, they kept sending me green blankets. Since the quality was so poor to begin with, I got fed up and ditched the idea all together. I decided to try dying the grey blanket I had on a whim, though, and it turned out great! Just let it soak in a tupperware with hot RIT dye for two days, and it's exactly what I was looking for. To make up for the extra fabric I need, I grabbed some blue/brown wool suiting from Joann's. I'll likely alternate panels to mix the two fabric types together.

Shield: A friend of mine just so happened to have a saucer sled in their garage that I plan to use as a base, with EVA overtop for designs.

Skirt: This alligator upholstery vinyl, painted blue and weathered.

Corset: Red and brown stretch faux-leather, with a red acrylic wash and weathering.

Spear: Worbla, with a rake handle. The pole I have is too short for my liking, so I'm planning on scrounging up something longer.

Armor: Worbla and foam. I reused the leg and chest armor (added battle damage with a hot knife and dremel, and repainted), but rebuilt the bracers, belt, and tiara, and did new leather-work for all of the pieces.

Boots: Looking for some cheap wedges at thrift stores to cover with faux leather, but haven't had any luck so far.

Scabbard: Hope to cover a foam scabbard in faux-leather, if time allows.

Hoping to get this all done by WWStL!

Re: Wonder Woman - DoJ-Inspired Rebuild

Took a (long) study break to build a scabbard. The base is two sheets 1/4" EVA, with a thin, 1/4" strip separating the two on the outside edges. I covered it in faux leather and hot glue, and the hardware is Worbla and foam, with a few brads for the rivets. The "owl" is a piece of half-inch EVA I carved several years back.

Totally excellent! I love your work:) Wish we were closer so we could do a photoshoot-my armoured Batman will be finished in a week, pics with a really good Wonder Woman would totally be the perfect finish!

That would be awesome! How are the conventions in BC? I do LOVE that neck of the woods, though it'll probably be years before I can make it back.

The cons are pretty good around here-technically, there are a lot of anime ones because we are on the Pacific Rim, But we have Fan Expo Vancouver in the fall, and in the last four years it has hosted Shatner, Fisher, West and Ward, etc, and in a couple of weeks we have Emerald City in Seattle. Kinda worried about that one though, Reedpop bought it to add to their roster, and the only really interesting guest is Fillion-after that, just a bunch of CW stars. It'd be great if you could make it over here for a con, but what are the cons like where you are? I'm not even sure I know where that is!

Missouri, US - Planet Comicon is great, while Wizard World St. Louis has steadily been going downhill. At 60 bucks for a Saturday ticket, this might be my last year...

Re: Wonder Woman - DoJ-Inspired Rebuild

$60 for one day? That's insane! Then, you gotta add on food, hotel possibly, buying things, autographs, photo ops-we really have picked an expensive hobby, haven't we?

Re: Wonder Woman - DoJ-Inspired Rebuild

Made some progress with the leather fixtures and the scabbard.

Also sewed the majority of the cloak today, with alternating panels of blue and brown wool. I'm planning on incorporating some more seam lines to add detail, but we'll see if that gets done...

Three more days until St. Louis Comic Con!

Re: Wonder Woman - DoJ-Inspired Rebuild

So I finally finished this costume up!

12890941_1066147513458377_796871168867179764_o.jpg12901546_1065585083514620_5341401758240092917_o.jpg12909698_10205236441100754_4879683869983848196_o.jpg

I made the shield from a plastic saucer sled, skinned in EVA foam. I used 3M spray adhesive to mount a sheet of foam of the same diameter as the plastic shield base, then edged the outside with a strip of worbla for stability. All the raised details on top are EVA strips and furniture tacks, with the lettering and lines done with a wood-burning iron. The faux-Greek is a quote from Hippolyte in the WW TV series: "... in a world of ordinary mortals, you are a wonder woman." The hammered texture is done with a dremel. I covered the whole thing in plastidip and wood glue, before spraying it down with hammered brown Krylon. The rest of the bronzey paint is acrylic.

As well, my horse turns 30 years old this spring, so I made it a priority to get some shots with him before I don't get another chance. But man is he still a wonder horse!

I also met up with @STLAssassin and his wife in their fantastic Dragon Age armor that took best group!

You make a great Wonder Woman. The pictures with the horse are absolutely brilliant. The horse pictures really capture the Amazon warrior feel of a "real world" Wonder Woman. Wonderful costume and pictures!!!

Thanks! I couldn't pass up the chance to take photos with him, and I'm so glad I did. I'm also really excited for the horse work it looks like they'll be featuring in the Wonder Woman film.

Those pics with your horse make this even better. You really have a knack for making your armor look real. It legit looks like it could have been used in the movie.

I'm planning on making my next suit out of EVA, so hopefully the same techniques translate! I always coat in woodglue and use hammered-texture spraypaint over top, which I can see cracking. Though it did seem to do alright on the shield.
Great job I had the privilege of seeing this suit in person. so amazing.

Thank you! Did you come dressed to StLCC??
