1:1 Millennium Falcon Cockpit Replica - Group Build

Let me first say that SK is amazing and generous and a big THANK YOU for lending your talents to my build!

So, it's good to see it coming back together again. Sucks about the lights... I feel your pain there. Have you come up with a better solution for break down/set up? How will the exterior paneling effect that?

Two MINOR nitpicks regarding the exposed panel in the hallway. First, I spotted some ENGLISH writing on the inside of the conduit box :eek lol. And second, just a matter of personal taste, I'd like to see the horizontal tubes have the same curvature as the hallway itself. Your thoughts?

On a scale of one to ten, your update is a ten (once again Sofa:cool) That cockpit looks the bomb and all of those greeblies makes it look sooo real!

Thank you, Sir! As always, I appreciate the kind words. It's so nice seeing those panels put back in place. Too bad we can't bring her to life just yet!

Awesome! As much as I love the details, my eyes go a little crossed at all the little fiddly bits being worked on. So it's great to see the "big picture" stuff with it all assembled. And I was hoping you'd get to the nav chairs soon, so I'm excited about that too!

Hey Lt W,

Thanks so much! I've spent so much time working all those little greeblies it was nice to be able to stand back and see her put back together. It not gives a sense of scale but also ties everything together.

The nav chairs are going to be a lot of fun and a real challenge! But it will be such a welcome addition to the build! :)

Hey HW,

Its my pleasure! I really enjoy watching your build and anything I can do to add to the smiles means a lot to me! :)

If you notice in many of the photos the panels are covered protecting the wiring. It wasn't until after our last show I did that. I'm considering laser cutting MDF with vents that will screw into place keeping the wiring save but the ventilation needed. I want to chat with Daniel and Co and get their thoughts. But we really need to protect the wiring from getting caught and breaking all the little connections.

The exterior skin is going to be a free floating steel frame with a MDF skin (still being discussed). The frame will mount to the platform and simply glide around the main structure and bolt into the frame in certain areas. If I did everything correctly, the skin should meet up with the nose and back corridor panels. Unfortunately, break down and setup is a job in itself. It will probably take 6-8 hours for assembly. There's really no way around it...

The English... yeah... I've been meaning to hide that. Bad me... I'll laser cut a panel and adhere into place. ;)

The horizontal tubes do in fact follow the curve of the panel but the area is so tight it's tough to see. If that makes sense?

Awesome job, SK!!! Whenever I get some spare time at a library, I love to check out the progress on this build. I'm really excited to see how it's progressing in the current venue. I dig the progress on the corridor, and I have a few comments/questions about that.

1) I love the look that the flex conduit adds!

2) Regarding the wiring in the exposed portion of the corridor, shots I've seen of the original set seem to suggest wiring/cabling of a bigger diameter than what you're currently using. Has cat5/6 cable been discussed?

3) The total number of padded panels in a corridor section seems a bit different from what I've been able to tell from screenshots. IIRC, the part of the corridor not hidden by the floor has 9 panels. I'll make another post in a few days to better illustrate the geometry I'm thinking of.

4) Have I mentioned how awesome it is to watch this project progess?!?! Keep up the good work, SK et al!

Hey HiPo,

A HUGE thanks to fellow RPFer Hostamon for sending that conduit to me! It's DEF going to be put to use! Watch for the 15" extension panels! :)

Other than a few more updates and weathering, the exposed panel is pretty much finished. That doesn't mean I'm not up for making positive changes. I never gave CAT5 wiring a thought, but that is a great idea! I think Daniel has some extra lying around.

The padding is going to be both fun and frustrating at the same time. We're not sure whether to use foam or fiberglass. However, we're using Steve Starkiller's 3D model as ref so we're DEF in the know as to how many large pads and how many of the small ring pads there are.

Thanks for the VERY kind words and I def appreciate the continued support. As exhausted as I am, I'm really trying to push myself to get past a few major hurdles. Seeing the cockpit almost back together really charges the batteries!

There is so much greeblie porn on this build I almost feel guilty looking at it!!!!

LOL! Thanks, Fuzz! Let the guilt flow through you...

Hey SK,

Seeing this coming together got me thinking:.....what will happen when you reach the ring corridor? will you continue towards the front hold? or towards the back...."uncharted territory"? if you go towards the hold, THAT part will be probably THE most iconic set ever seen.....mainly because of size. Mind boggles....

Hi Gang,

Just a quick morning update! Work continues on the shelf and extension panel greeblies and a new greeblie has emerged as well!

This is kind of what the extension panel greeblie looks like with paint

Adhered these little details together

More sanding

The sanding file caught one of the edges of the button greeblies and snapped the acrylic so I had to cut a new one

Primer!

I spent a few days looking at both ESB and TFA screen grabs and designed a new Volvo Panel Greeblie. Somewhere in this pile is the actual greeblie

Amazing work as always, Sofa!

Whenever you guys start putting her back together, it's like seeing it come to life. This is a wonderful build to watch!

Have you considered making all panels a sort of self-contained electrical unit, so that whenever you join two panels, you plug in a little plug an the two are connected, with the main power inlet in some place?

Hey BK,

The cockpit is essentially as big as its going to get. I've decided to create the entire corridor ring but the length will remain the same. There just isn't enough room to really do anything else unless I kicked everybody out of the warehouse... that would NOT be a good idea! ;)

If we're able to secure a larger warehouse space (which we're always looking for) it would be amazing to create the cockpit, corridor and main hull / hold! I can't even imagine trying to take that to a convention. It wouldn't happen! lol

Thanks so much, FF! I love seeing those top panels on as well. It's a completely different look when they're finally in place.

Right now, all the panels plug into one another. But some of the panels can be bypassed. I'm sure Daniel and Co could rig up a simple connector to illuminate each panel separately - that's a REALLY great idea!

Love those last greeblies Sofa. As for building a full corridor joining the back of the cockpit, you'll have to rent a 18 wheeler soon for that project to be transported to Cons:D

Hi Gang,

Another quick morning update!

Weathering started on the newly redesigned Volvo Panel greeblies

Really like the rendering with the real-world objects. You're a very talented individual and it's great to see how you visualize different options.
