M1-LY - Astromech for a Polaris RZR

ok, yes I will admit it. I have a difficult time focusing. I have more projects going and unfinished than you can shake a stick at. But the first step is admitting you have a problem. But I have a good excuse this time for starting a new project . . . I promise . . . seriously just hear me out!

So last year my wife and I bought a Polaris RZR 900. I have wanted an ATV all my life, and my wife was just as excited. So after a few glasses of wine at lunch she turned to me and said, "We should go look at ATV's." I tell you folks I drove 100+ MPH to get from lunch to the dealership before her buzz wore off. BOOM! it worked and we got it.

Now I was totally happy. I swear! But one thing was missing. Since it wasn't realistic to own an X-Wing or Y-Wing I thought "Why not do a little work on the RZR?" But what could I do that would not be totally ridiculous besides some stickers and what not. And then one day it hit me . . .

"This would be perfect." I explained to my wife. It was then she said, "Well, then the ATV needs a Star Wars type name. And I like Milly." Milly . . . I can make a Star Wars name out of that . . . M1-LY DONE!

So i reached out to my pops, @Junkyardjedi and told him I needed another dome, and some parts. Sadly though, the project sat for almost a full year. And that brings me to whjy this project trumped the others I have going. My company has an ATV trip planned and we are taking some new clients along. One of the couples going are a big deal to the company and we are trying to make the trip special for them. And wouldn't you know it? They are HUGE Star Wars fans. I told the boss, "I got this bro!"

So I set out to get this project completed as far as I could in a couple weeks so that when we unload our machines I have a little surprise for them.

where to start? I figured the tool box was a good place. I gave it a fresh coat of black paint to start.

and then i added some orange to match my machine as well as a little silver "damage" spots. I also started playing around with adding some greeblies. But I wanted them to be functional, and once I got them in the correct place I realized that I could use the threads to attach items like; shovel holder, gas cans, etc.

The box came out pretty good so far, and I like the color scheme. I put it in the RZR and we took it out for the weekend, it worked well and matched close enough.

Next I had to start working on the droid plate and how it would sit on the tool box. This is a little tricky because there are certainly times I would not want the droid attached. When we do long camping trips and what not I need the top of the box for additional storage. So the droid needs to be able to attach and then remove when needed. So i figured a plate, or platform for the droid to sit in would work.

I realized something right away, and that was the plate was not deep enough. It didn't look right. I wanted the portion that the droid was sitting in to have more wieght, to be more substantial. So I worked on it a bit.

I was good with it now, and decided to move onto working up the droid body and arms.

This is where I ran into the next issue. I realized at this point that the droid was too tall. I wasn't going for screen accuracy or anything here on how an astromech would sit in an X-Wing, but it was too tall and I didn't like the way it looked, so I cut down the body and arms. I then also made another set of angled cuts along the box so it had a nicer bevel all around and did a test fit.

Then I gave the box several coats of sealant, a paint job, and some detail work.

After this stage while I waited for paint to dry i switched gears and work on my helmet. I mean, if you are going to pilot a RZR you need a helmet right???

The Helmet is not finished by a long shot. I need to get the detail work on it, graphics, etc. But its not too bad for right now. (not screen accurate of any type, but I did use the the TFA design a bit, I like those helmets)

Now, i will apologize as I was too distracted at this stage and didn't document any of the process, so all of the sudden I was at this stage. This project is not finished, and there are several steps and things that need finished, but this is where it sits tonight. Thanks for looking, enjoy!!!

So so cool. Fantastic and original idea. Make sure to post a pic with you piloting once that helmet is finished!

you bet I will. I have my unfortunate wife working on my orange flight jacket and vest as well. "Go big or go home" i told her. She laughed at me and said, "Go Geek or Go home." she was of course correct.

But I will get more pics of progress and driving around for you all for sure.

Nice work as usual....

the he biggest thing I took away from this is, get the wife buzzed before asking for things. I've always wanted to get an FJ Crusier, so I will book us a wine tour for this weekend.

Thanks guys. I am going on a trip this weekend with it. So I will get some photos for you all. I'll even wear my geek flight suit.
