Tom's ESB DL-44 Blasters - Hoth & Bespin Hero

Recently purchased from there too. I ordered the natural wood grips but got the synthetic. :(

However, I also noticed how much tighter this denix was compared to my other two. The casting is a but cleaner and just fits together tighter.

:) specifically the wood gripped ones seem to be smaller than most Denixes. I think the more you pay you actually get higher quality sometimes with these, im so sorry your order got screwed up!

No worries - I plan on fitting it to another blaster now anyways. But I am still digging how much better it is than the other two denixes I have. The last wood grip one I bought has kinda odd fitting grips. They do seem undersized for the frame and even from the box seemed loose. Like you were saying, I think they may be smaller - which strikes me as bizarre. I would figure theres a master mold for these?

It sounds like to me the first ones get the wood grips and the further they get, the larger and poorer the casts get, and they get cheaper grips. Maybe.

I think you're right on regarding those screws going thru the scope mount to the other side, under the pistons.

As for the cut motor coil parts above the trigger, I think they are held in place w/ Phillips head machine hex screws.
I cite this image as showing flat sides to the part.
I'm going to use some screws I have that were used to mount a hard disk drive (2 on either side).

It's possible for more theories to be put forth as better resolution photos & new images become available.

I decided to skip chopping up motor coil parts a while ago. Since they were trying to mimic distributor rings anyway, I happened to have some on hand!

Dry fitting the parts together today. Thank you Boba Debt for making this happen.

Given the new developments on the Hoth Blaster I have some things to think about, and would welcome advice!

1) I plan on dusting my Hoth FH with black rattle can spray just like the real thing. Should I buck it into a makeshift lathe and correct the bevel shape? Leave the knurling as it is?

I'm hesitant, because this is a beautiful flash hider and another may come along more to my liking. I'd rather not alter this if someone else wants it.

2) Since I already drilled through my gun, I may forget about the new spacer discovery, and the new bracket discovery. If it turns out there was a black cylinder on the disc, I'll add that

3) On the Bespin blaster - there are two points of attachment, a set screw and main thread, but it still wiggles a bit. How would they have corrected that?

4) Bespin blaster, gun blueing with the plastic distributor ring glued on? does that look weird? I thought They were blued but I thought they sprayed paint when they used model kit parts...

Thanks!

Thanks guys!

My Bespin blaster is done. I used an accurized Denix from Boba Debt and the accompanying kit. my girlfriend and I stripped the gun and I applied a 20 year old perma blue.

the mount was tricky, as the main disc and screw still let the mount spin. Boba Debt tried drilling and tapping an extra (2nd) hole for me, but it still wouldn't stay put. Many screws and adjustments later and the grub screw is in there, plus the main bolt, but held in mostly by epoxy and apoxie sculpt.

Thanks to Kurtyboy for the scope

The FH - I painted two satin black stripes, on the shoulder and the tip of the cone. I used rough 60 grit sandpaper about 2 hours after paint application, to scrape away some paint. it came off in pleasing patterns, like the V2 lightsaber, because it wasn't fully cured, but not wet anymore. I then applied aluminum black for a "carbon scoring" affect and admittedly went further than the real prop (its so much fun!) and then sprayed a satin clear coat to seal my work

I used a flat head screwdriver to scratch up the surface before adding the greeblie. I used a real 1907s distributor ring and some loctite epoxy. I filled the hole in with epoxie for stability and used a Q tip to dab satin black paint over the glue. I wouldn't want to look at the yellow goop when playing with this thing :)

here we have it! I played with a couple iphoto filters at the end.

Re: Tom's ESB DL-44 Blasters - Hoth & Bespin Hero

Looking really good! The gun blued even well and I definitely dog the flash hider. I like the paint on the tip, very cool. That's perma blue on the fun you say? I found that it didn't get very black on my denix, aluminum black was much better. And what do you have for a scope there? Resin?

Yep! it actually took 8-10 passes of Perma blue to get it dark. It was brown at first, then blue, then dark, dark blue. I've used AB before as well, and it came out brown/black and blotchy but I probably just hadn't done it enough. the perma blue gives you a softer, more consistent finish, but it's not as black.

thanks for the compliments. I was sure this is how they did it on set, Luke's muzzle gets WAY too black in certain areas to be only a blackening solution. I only planned on using AB a tiny bit to keep my awesome weathering viewable, but now it's only viewable in the light. I'm not mad, thats probably part of the magic of filmmaking. One thing I noticed from the screen is the blasters looked jet back in some scenes and blued in others. Some of Scottjua's pictures convinced me the gun was blued and the mounts were jet black and just like the Vader helmet, that color scheme changes in different light.

and thats a real M19 scope! it's heavy and still has the azimuth markings in the lens

Looking just fantastic! I'm in the middle of redoing my ANH hero and an ANH for a commission - the bluing/AB info is really helpful!

After all the info that's come to light I altered my Hoth blaster to better match the prop - with a couple artistic choices. (Decided to use the distributor rings they meant to use instead of cutting up motor coil plates...and decided to keep the dry brushed brown color on these MGC grips since a member here filled the 9 in the grips with putty and amazingly masked it like it was never there)

you see Anakin Starkillers Hoth flash hider with a dusting of high heat black and fine sharpie knurls. The inside of the cone and the inside of the rear are solid color (high heat is very flat in sheen)

I made a brass and silver metal spacer that's around the reported thickness and adjusted with my own eyeballing. The disc is hand cut and accurate at the same thickness as the bracket - weathered with paint, JB weld to match the grey putty and some epoxy and paint to mimic the ketchup goop or whatever it is.

there WERE screws all the way through to the Pistons...scrapped that idea for three shorter screws with nuts inside the magazine...which left the lonely hex nuts on the other side and now they serve to mimic the original mystery parts anyway!

while waiting for the thinkjedi scopes Red Button and I mocked up one of adamatas m19 castings. High heat black dusting, crayon in the letters and a satin clear coat..real brass screws in the front and....also some gold run n buff! Not too shabby

Re: Tom's ESB DL-44 Blasters - Hoth & Bespin Hero

Came here to show a solution to screwing up your wood grips. I hand routed the back of some walnut grips with a dreamel and went a little overboard :Lol to fix: a stick of JB Quick wood, smashed against your grips and the grips against the frame. I did this with apoxie sculpt to some mgc grips and those dried to shape overnight. JB Wood sticks to EVERYTHING. So these are stuck for good I think, used my wet thumb to even out the surface like clay.

Also, I chopped the end of my ANH barrel and glued a threaded spacer I had lying around as an attempt to mimic the rifled barrel!
